We Scratched a Card and Ended Up Forgetting We Live in a City Long Hunter State Park was never on our radar. Then it showed up on one of our RIO cards, and just like that, we were driving clear across Nashville on a random Saturday in April to a trail we'd never once thought about, despite living here for years. The walk circles Couchville Lake. Paved, shaded, a little over two miles, free the entire way. The water was down when we went, and it somehow made everything better, exposed banks, docks sitting higher than usual, that stripped down look a lake gets when it's showing you more than it normally does. The wildflowers were everywhere. And the squirrels were having an absolute moment, full sprint up and down every tree like the whole park belonged to them. We just stood there and watched. You're still technically in the city the entire walk. It does not feel like it. So we finally scratched our first RIO card, and it sent us to ice cream school, which is a sentence I did not expect to type, but here we are. The Roll Academy is inside the Nashville Farmers Market and they teach rolled ice cream classes. Thai style, frozen plate, you mix your toppings right in front of you and roll the whole thing up into little cylinders. Neither Nathan nor I had ever heard of this place. Combined we have lived in Nashville for 40 years. This city continues to humble us. Small class, great instructor, genuinely fun evening. We made cookies and cream first and then got to pick our own flavors for round two. Nathan and I went completely different directions, and both walked away very happy about our choices. Card 1 delivered. We have no idea what Card 2 will be, and that might actually be the best part. Okay so for Christmas I bought Nathan one of those classic 11pm Facebook impulse purchases and plot twist: it was completely legit and it might have just changed how we experience the city we've lived in for a combined 40 years. It's a box of 50 scratch-off cards from Reach International Outfitters, all centered around Nashville. Every card hides a local adventure behind a scratch-off panel. You don't know what you're doing until you're doing it. We're working through the whole deck and documenting every single one. Some will be things we've never tried. Some will surprise us. A few will probably make for a very good story. The cruise ended… but Nashville said “not so fast.” 😅 You know that feeling when you come off a trip and you’re still riding the high… everything was smooth, fun, a little magical… …and then reality hits you like a brick? Yeah. That was us. Days 8 and 9 were supposed to be simple. Wrap up the trip, get home, ease back into normal life. Instead, we got travel chaos, plans that refused to cooperate, and one of those days where you just have to laugh because there’s nothing else you can do. Honestly though? These are the moments that make the best stories later. Not the perfect sunsets or the planned excursions… but the “what is even happening right now” kind of days. Day 7: From Capuchin Chaos to Reef Squid Magic

We started the day surrounded by capuchin monkeys that had way too much personality

Day 6: Jungle Temples, Howler Monkeys, and a River Cruise That Lied to Us
