Friendly Reminder to Fan Artists and Writers

Create what ever you want. What ever. There are no limits here, no exceptions. Fan content creators exist in the lawless land of imagination and ideas. You want to make something that only you and maybe one other person would ever be interested in seeing? You want to write that au that's been done hundreds of times before? That unspeakably niche cross-over? Do it. Be self-indulgent. Be free. Make whatever you want regardless of what anyone might say. There are no rules and regulations for what you can create, because fandom is for fun.

So do what makes you happy, what you enjoy, what you're interested in. The reasons don't matter really. You owe no one an explanation for why you wanted to make something. And you don't owe them an apology either.

And yes, this does include "problematic" topics, themes, and ships. In fact it includes all of them, because as I said there are no exceptions. Write that non-con dark-fic, draw that violent, gory art. Whether it's for a light hearted, wholesome series or one that's already acquainted with the dark and disturbing. Enjoy whatever kind of ships you want, those with age-gaps or power-imbalances, incestuous ships or ones featuring the most vile of villains. Play them twisted or fluff-filled and happy, what ever way you want to. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with any of it.

Bottom line, just have fun. Enjoy yourself. And never let anyone else try and dictate what you can and can’t create.  ❤️

This been me lately, both with a random as hell crossover ship, a oc/canon “crossover” ship (which I’ve never been into before but apparently it owns me now), and my very self-indulgent “let’s crossover like seven different series! the halves of the ships are now found families!” project -- my point being! I feel this big time my dude, and my inbox/messages for any random ship talks if you want. <3

When you’ve seen so much more of the bad sides to fandoms than the good, that you come to a point of just being exhausted and scared at the idea of interacting with any of them, so instead you just try to enjoy things by yourself from afar. But then you’ve got nobody to talk to about it and share your love of the series with, so you end up feeling lonely and a bit frustrated by it all.

Unfortunately a very familiar feeling, and why I struggle a lot to interact with other fans of things I like, though I’m still trying. This is also why I’ve said before that I’m happy to listen to anyone who wants to gush about an interest/series/ship they like! It might not be quite the same if I’m not familiar with it, but I’ll happily engage you in talking about it. <3

problematic ships of any kind

However you ship and whatever reasoning behind it is ENTIRELY YOUR OWN, and no one should attack you or demand to know of your traumas to see if you’re “allowed” to ship it. Fictional shipping of any kind does not harm anyone whatsoever

Exactly! It sickens me the amount of times I’ve posted something about all ships being welcome/good and sooo many people reblog it with, “except x, y, and z.” No, those people missed the point entirely. ALL ships are good. No exceptions. You can find a ship uncomfortable or weird, you don’t have to ship every ship. Hell, I don’t ship every ship, but I understand that people have the right to ship anything they want and I don’t judge them for that shit.

Can we all just…. collectively respect and agree that fanfiction writers shouldn’t feel pressured into doing hours and hours of research to make sure their stories are more “realistic?” Can we mutually respect the effort some writers CHOOSE to make by researching tons of details to their heart’s content, as well as the ones who just make it up as they go along? 

Lately, I just really feel like fandom culture places an unrealistic emphasis on research, and is often used as the dominant compliment towards those writers who are more inclined to do so. But, as a result, there’s both indirect and sometimes direct shaming towards authors who simply don’t have the time, energy, or desire to over-complicate the already emotionally exhausting task of creative writing by adding extensive research and details to their fics. 

Research should be a choice, not a priority or requirement. Some people are mega nerds when it comes to research and get pleasure out of it as much as (if not more so) than the act of writing itself. Others, like myself, already deal with crippling anxiety over writing ANYTHING at all, and the moment I think of “accurate” details and “realism” to my story, I crumble under the perceived pressure. 

I’ve personally been shamed by anons in the past for my apparent “laziness” when I last ranted about the injustice of expecting tons of research into my fanfiction, and it’s haunted me ever since. It’s a big reason why I’m stuck on my ongoing AU, because I keep lamenting over the lack of knowledge I have over drug lords, corrupt underworld organizations, etc, when, at the end of the day, it’s a goddamn Inuyasha fanfiction featuring demons and humans alike in gangs! Who gives a fuck?! There are TONS of professional authors out there who put little to no research into their PUBLISHED works, and yet, most of the criticisms they get are usually not based in the lack of research, but in the writing itself. 

And even though I know I can also write whatever the fuck I want and however I want, that pressure, that invisible wall continues to block me. 

Just….. let fanfiction writers do their thing, okay? Whether or not there’s research used in small or nonexistent doses, or immense amounts, that does not define the quality of the writing of the fic itself. It’s time to stop this notion that if you’re writing an anime fic that every single nuance of Japanese culture must be included in some shape or form. It’s time to stop expecting exact historical accuracy in a historical AU. It’s just….. not fair and it’s incredibly emotionally/psychologically exhausting to place that kind of pressure on any fanfic writer who’s only writing the fics for fun, not for profit.

headsup that the anti "kisaragi-quartet" has made a new harassment and blocklist post for anyone they found in the anti-anti tags. kisaragi-quartet(.)tumblr(.)com/post/187125873560/had-some-time-to-kill-so-anyway-heres-an-anti. they also made a post warning minors that if they get into hetalia they'll be harassed and deserve it, with a lot of hypocritical gaslighting about how there are adults that'll prey on you and make you think their way in problematic fandoms. just like adult antis.
