I can’t believe we’re here again either, but that’s how it is.
You’d think with everything going on I wouldn’t have time to binge watch tv shows, but you’d be wrong.
After Vampire Diaries I felt like falling asleep to The Fosters, thought I could trigger some nice Brandon themed dreams. But instead I got hooked again.
I finished it. I’m bitter.
First of all, let’s make this clear, Callie is one of those characters that’s seen as flawless and incredible by tha other characters but that is actually very much the opposite. She’s mindlessly impulsive, selfish, immature ... But the rest of the characters simply ignore that.
The show begins with a fantastically ambitious premise. The family dinamic with Stef, Lena, Jesus, Mariana and Brandon is very interesting. Callies behavior is very fitting and her love for her brother realistic.
Then the show turns into a soap opera. They decided that anything that could happen, must happen.
Stef and Lena’s issues are generally realistic, but very frustrating to watch with an outsiders perspective.
Mariana is a teenager, she makes mistakes, she’s oblivious to other people’s feelings sometimes, but overall she’s very caring and kind.
Jesus is a character that I find generally boring. I think his plot could have made him more interesting, but he ended up just lightly fueling to the main drama and nothing more.
Jude is extremely unlike able pretty much through the whole show. Apathetic, self absorbed, ungrateful ...
Brandon is mistreated throughout the 5 seasons but still tries to improve, so his best and love a lot. He makes mistakes as well, but he’s constant in his care for his parents and the family as a whole. I hated how he didn’t seem to have a real sibling dynamic for most of the show with the twins. He cares a lot about having Callie be part of the family and yet he’s never as protective and caring about Mariana or Jesus when they go through tough stuff.
Then again, he does love Callie unwaveringly even when she never manages to give him what he deserves. It’s fair enough for her to need a family, but after the first time, she should know better than to use Brandon’s feelings. She’s aware of how much he cares, so she moves through life being with one or another, doing reckless things that could have harmed her situation way more than being with Brandon, because she knows he’ll be there.
She is reckless. She runs away with Wyatt, instead of finding a reasonable solution, she sneaks around with Brandon and blames him later, she does illegal things (the Mexico adventure, breaking into someone’s house when she decided to become a detective and law enforcer without any legal validation because she just has to be the one saving every damn person ...) and gets in trouble way more than anyone would even trying, and somehow always comes out without much of a consequence.
I get that she wants to help, but she has to realize that helping is not risking everything you have every single time you find someone struggling, but rather creating something where all those people can hold on to.
Like Girls United. Why did they just take that part of her life out of the show? It was one of the best things the system had and they just decided to cut it.
Let’s talk Robert Quinn and Shopia. Well done again Callie. Way to be nice with everyone and put everything on the line for every hurting soul then destroying your sister’s and father’s hearts.
She’s been to multiple foster homes, she’s even liked some in the past. Some months into the Foster’s home and she is 100% sure she doesn’t want to give her just-discovered family a chance? Not even for a bit? Like, come on, she spends years unsafe in the system, not knowing what’s going to happen. Now her brother is safe in a happy family, she has the chance to be in their life but also have yet another family who love and want her ... and she ... she has so fast come to love the Fosters so deeply that she won’t even entertain the idea? Ugh
And Robert trying to get custody is completely fair and expectable. He isn’t trying to hurt Callie, he’s trying to have his daughter in his live and give her everything her life has been lacking for the past few years (save for the past few months), stability, security, love. He truly isn’t a villain, even if painted as one. Stef and Lena hate him strongly but if they put themselves in his shoes they’d do the same. They’ve had people oppose them and been rational about it even when fighting them, but with him they’re just raging. Not fair.
And Shopia is clearly unwell, she needs her sister. Somehow Callie manages to put herself in these situations for others like the girls at Girls United, AJ... but can’t feel that same compassion for a girl who just wants her love?
She uses them, she gets what she needs out of them, connections, a lawyer, money for a fundraiser ... but they’re not a part of her life otherwise. Gross.
Mat had the chance to be much more, he truly could have been an impressive character. He was still good nonetheless.
Emma is a fantastic example for a versatile woman, she’s femenino and strong. She holds her ground and is clear about what she wants. Sure she isn’t always all of this, but she’s still one of the best characters in the show.
Can we please bring Rita back? I’m aware that the show is long over but she was so so so amazing. Such a good moral example for people, honestly.
Mike and Ana were very good together. She seemed beyond redemption to me at the beginning, but her hurting and struggling to become better warmed my heart. Mike needs someone to need him, it’s clear throughout the show, and AJ isn’t the right someone. Ana, a baby, that would have made him happier, accomplished.
Now I’m going to fast forward to the shows finale, so spoilers ahead.
They missed the mark. By fair. Like very very far.
5 years into the future? I’m in, love that shit.
Everyone is quite successful (except Jude) in their own way? Too unrealistic, come on...
Brandon is getting married to random lady we’re just meeting after last seeing him dying inside because of Grace’s passing. Go ahead and kill a character for no real purpose.
He deserves happiness, and I could be okay with him and random lady being together if he was truly madly deeply in love with her. But then the screenwriters have him unwavering looking at Callie during the Romeo and Juliet song at the families dinner, they make him doubt going through with the wedding in a very dismissive way towards random lady, and they add that little collage of images and scenes between him and Callie. It’s like they wanted to anger everyone. Get them together or get it over with by closing the chapter unequivocally, but don’t add those teasing scenes that make it seem like he’s not happy with his choice.
Eliza really does love him and is kind and understanding and supportive, they could have been a good couple if they didn’t try to make everything so extra.
Anyway, that’s all. For now at least. If there’s anything I am frustrated with that I haven’t said here I must post again about this.
