Ahhhh Venezia!
I loved this country! Zadar is like a small version of Venice except you don’t have to pay 15 euro for a bellini, and you can walk the length of old town in 10 or 15 minutes. The dollar buys a lot of Croatian Korunas, but I still had to double check the prices when I wanted to gorge myself on the seafood in town. We stayed near the center of old town, and since it was a couple of weeks before high season, we got to experience the local culture without fighting tourists. The sea organ built into the stone by the ocean was something else. I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ll post of video of the different sounds it makes.
There are too many islands off the coast of Zadar to see in just a few days, but Dugi Otok has one of most beautiful beaches in the Med. Unfortunately, since it was the very beginning of the season, Sakarun Beach was knee-deep in seaweed. The locals we had some Maraska shots with kept apologizing for the mess and thanked us over and over again for visiting. The people were incredible everywhere we went, some of the nicest in Europe.
Plitvice Lakes was our next destination. A protected reserve a couple of hours drive from Zadar. It was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen.
Bibic winery is one of the few Croatian Winery's that exports to the states. They let us taste all of their wines and kept on serving us the ones we liked. They didn't skimp on their 70$ bottle of Merlot either. Then one of the owners of the winery took us to a local seafood restaurant in Skradin. A small seaport town on the coast built up into the hills. We had grilled Sea bass, squid ink pasta, and octopus salad.
