Weight Loss Plateaus Finally Explained!
Alas! The dreaded weight loss plateau that so many people experience and have no idea why it happens or how to break through it. This is one of the main reasons why people just stop trying and give up on their weight loss journey. It can feel horrible when you see no change on the scale despite eating right and working out like crazy. People are motivated when they see positive results and changes. The moment the results stagnate and there is no change, they assume the worst and feel that their efforts are in vain. They think that it’s their fate to be fat. That’s not true. Let’s see why weight loss plateaus occur. The first point we must make is the difference between weight loss and fat loss. You can lose fat but not see a weight change. Most people don’t realize this, and it takes a while to wrap the mind around this fact. After all, how could you lose fat but not weight? Simple. You could have gained lean muscle because of your training. So, the new muscle weight will offset the actual fat loss. You body’s lean muscle mass has increased. That is a good thing. Another point is that your body could be retaining water. Your body’s water weight fluctuates daily. The best way will be to track your progress with body composition tests over a period of time. You are concerned with fat loss. Weight loss is just secondary. Changing your body’s composition is what really matters. Another very common problem is that people overestimate their training and underestimate their eating. It’s really tough to train hard, but it is so easy to eat! So, in their mind, they assume that a hard 45-minute workout may have burned over a 1000 calories, but eating 2 slices of pizza in 15 minutes will add up to about 300 calories. This of course is wrong! A 45-minute workout may burn about 300 to 400 calories. 2 slices of pizza may contain above 600 calories. Now you see how easy it is to negate a workout with poor diet choices. So, when people slip up on their diets, and then later on see no changes on the scale, they wonder why all the hard work is not paying off. It’s not a plateau but self-sabotage. Another common mistake is not changing the numbers. When you first start losing weight, you are heavier and the required calorie consumption for fat loss is high. However, as you lose weight and become smaller, your daily calorie requirement will drop. You will need to recalculate your new daily calorie requirement based on your current weight. Eating the same amount as before will just not cut it. You will have to eat even less. There is another reason for a fat loss plateau. It’s called adaptive thermogenesis. Ooh! That’s a big word. So what does it mean? Basically, what it means is that your body’s metabolism drops due to the caloric restrictions. This could be caused by a starvation diet or maybe heredity. Attempting to cut too many calories too fast is the most common reason for this happening. Aim to cut no more than 500 calories from your daily caloric requirement. This will maintain your metabolic rate. If you have been doing that and still experience a plateau, then it could be that your body type is that of an endomorph. A way around this is to take a 3-day break from the diet and eat what you want. You may gain a pound of two, but your metabolism will see a boost. You’ll break through the plateau, and then you can carry on with the caloric deficit. You will burn more fat and continue on towards your desired goal. Now you know what a plateau is and how you should avoid it. In the event that you still experience one, just keep going and stick to the plan. In time, you will break through the plateau. Never give up and stop. That’s the surest way to failure.
For all those who glorify your EDs or hold onto them for social media fame or think you’ll one day grow out if it:
I went to treatment in 2006. It’s 2018. I was just contacted by a former patient I went to treatment with. She got me up to speed with the progress of our former friends.
Two have died. Many have relapsed and are still struggling.
Again. This was 2006. I was 20. Most of the girls there were in there 20s. And now we are in our 30s and some of us in our 40s. The person who contacted me is in her 60s and going back into residential in a few weeks.
Let that sink in.
Tumblr gives you a false reality. Eating disorders don’t stop when you reach a certain age. Eating disorsers don’t end once you hit 30 and are ready to trade in your pumpkin spice lattes and ugg boots and small apartments.
They continue when you buy that house and pay your first mortgage and get engaged and married. They are there when you get pregnant or have kids and go to your first PTA meeting. And sometimes they continue when you are 45 and getting a mammogram because you’re old enough now to regularly get those. They are there when you have menopause and they are there when your hair goes grey.
So if you think you’ll be spared, you won’t. Unless, of course, you get help.
You think any of us back in 2006 thought that in 2018, we’d STILL be struggling? Hello no. We got help because we wanted to be DONE.
And even then we all fucking relapsed. Not because treatment didn’t work, but because EDs are a bitch and need constant recovery.
Had I not gotten pregnant, my life would have gone into the shitter. And even with my daughter, I STILL can’t let go of the food.
Eating disorders are not jokes, man. They are with you for life. Recovery needs to be lifelong or you will be that 60-year-old woman either dying of her ED or still in treatment.
Reblogging because this is SO important and if it helps even just one person then it’s worth it❤️
This is the greatest post I’ve ever seen. Thank you so much!!!
I wish I had seen this years ago

ALRIGHT. LISTEN UP.
So recently, I got calls from the phone number, (937) 353-8319. They claim to be a job service, and one of their “employees”, Carrigan, is friends with whoever the call recipient is, and that Carrigan has recommended you for this $15.00/h “job”. I also got a text message from (937) 607-1493, claiming to be Carrigan, and that they need stuff to “win a scholarship”. I do not know anyone by the name of Carrigan and I know very well that this is a very dangerous scam. If you receive a call from a number, and they ask you if you would like a job for $15.00/h, HANG UP IMMEDIATELY. If you accept the “job” offer, and you go in for an interview, they will give you a drugged bottle of water and you will wake up somewhere you don’t want to be. These phone calls & texts are from a human trafficking service, and if you oblige to them, you will be sold to people and you will be raped, no doubt about it. So PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT ANSWER THESE CALLS OR TEXTS. I have listened to the voicemails, and allowed my dad to do the same, and he learned that anyone offering a $15.00/h “job” is a human trafficker. PLEASE SIGNAL BOOST THIS ALL OVER TUMBLR
Okay, I am reblogging this because it is relevant again. I got another call from a 353 number. Not the exact same number, but I know that it is a trafficker because it’s 353 just like the last one. I also want this to signal boost so PLEASE REBLOG THIS.
Why are people deleting the captions though I had to search for what the pictures meant don’t do that
a side note, because theyre very popular around the DMV, If you ever see a sign with something akin to ‘free debt erasure’ ‘15/h job’ etc and ONLY A PHONE NUMBER, ignore it. tear it down if you can, because those are well known scams and sex-trafficking baits.do not, by any means, call or respond to these messages. do not let your friends do it. do not.
THIS IS IMPORTANT AF THANK Y’ALL HOLY SHIT
Oklahoma is one of the worst states as far as human trafficking, so thank y’all so fucking much. That’s literally my life and the lives of everyone I know that y’all just saved. Thank you. Thank you thank you thank you
