A marijuana-smoking woman was arrested on Saturday in Phoenix after she accidentally drove away with her five-week-old son in a child safety seat on the roof of her vehicle, police said.
The baby fell off the car in the middle of an intersection and was found unharmed and strapped into the seat, said Phoenix police spokesman James Holmes.

When a single act of cannibalism is reported, it is as unfathomable as it is unsettling. To have five such incidents dominate the news cycle -- as was the case this week -- seems almost unprecedented.

McDonald’s is the only company in the world that turns over its inventory faster than Apple, and let’s face it, that’s largely because most of its stock doesn’t last five days. Green Lantern, one of DC Comics' oldest and most enduring heroes, is serving as a beacon for the publisher again, this time as a proud, mighty and openly gay hero.
The change is revealed in the pages of the second issue of "Earth 2" out next week, and comes on the heels of what has been an expansive year for gay and lesbian characters in the pages of comic books from Archie to Marvel and others.

Turns out the Marvel Universe is more progressive than the real universe.

Indeed, the unemployment rate is a bit arbitrary. But May's jobs report is nevertheless one of the more important ones in a while, as The New York Times'David Leonhardt points out. The economy added a dismal 69,000 jobs in May, less than half of what analysts had expected and the lowest number of total jobs created in a year.

A former employee of a Swedish medical university is accused of cutting his wife's lips off and eating them.
The Local says the Swedish Aftonbladet newspaper reported that the unnamed man allegedly flew into a rage after he became suspicious that his much younger wife was having an affair.

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday rejected the Corn Refiners Association's bid to rename its sweetening agent "corn sugar."
Given the sweetener's bad reputation in recent years, the association submitted an application to the agency in 2010 to have the product renamed on nutrition labels.
But the FDA said that it defines sugar as a solid, dried and crystallized food – not a syrup.

The state was slated to net more than a billion dollars in tax revenue once the Menlo Park-based company went public, according to a recent report in the Los Angeles Times. But Facebook's stock hasn't done as well as people hoped, and the cash shortfall for California may instead end up in the hundreds of millions, according to an analyst quoted in the LA Times.

Now Facebook's failed IPO is hurting everyone.
A federal appeals court in Boston ruled the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional Thursday, setting up a likely Supreme Court battle on gay marriage sometime after the presidential election.
The decision is the second federal appeals ruling this year to side with gay-marriage proponents and comes weeks after President Barack Obama became the first president to say he believes same-sex couples should be able to wed. In February, a court in San Francisco struck down a California voter initiative that barred gay marriage.

Shares of Facebook fell below $29 yesterday for the first time, and the company's co-founder and CEO saw his fortune tumble right along with it. According to Bloomberg, Zuck's 503.6 million shares are now worth $14.7 billion, which knocks him off Bloomberg's Billionaire's Index of the 40 wealthiest individuals in the world.

Facebook aficionados who invested in the IPO have also cooled on the brand. Michael McHale, a New York-based artisan industrial chandelier maker, spent $1,000 on shares. “When I log onto my Facebook, all I think about is the money I lost,” he says, noting that he believed the hype would sustain the share price — at least in the short-term. “I don’t plan on Friending Steve Wozniak anytime soon — I’d de-Friend him if I could.” (Wozniak, a co-founder of Apple, told reporters before the IPO that he’d buy Facebook at any price.) Michael Provitera, a professor of organizational behavior at Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla., who bought $4,000 in shares, agrees. “I’d feel a lot better about the site if I hadn’t bought it at this price,” he says.
