I built an indoor makiwara!
I have zero experience building anything and I managed to build this!
Now, the reason I built it this way was because I wanted mine to look nice and be usable indoors without scuffing the hardwood floors. Yes, I know the top part needs to be trimmed down a bit but that will come later.
Here’s what I started with:
All of these parts needed to be sanded down starting with the medium grit sandpaper and then fine grit sand paper. I used a small sanding board with a handle so my hands wouldn’t get tired. On the large piece of plywood I sanded in a circular motion so the little loose pieces would pop up and I would avoid getting splinters in my feet.
Now for staining:
This is the color from one coat of oil based mahogany color stain. If you need instructions on how to do this youtube is filled with videos. One thing not pictured in this photo are the box of gloves you will need so your hand won’t become a shade of reddish brown.
I only stained one side of the plywood because I was out of stain from that tiny container of stain. If you want a second coat of stain you will need two containers of stain.
Connecting the pieces:
I used two 1.5 inch screws for this to connect the 12 inch and 18 inch pieces.
I put a thin layer of gorilla glue on before attaching the planks as feet to the unstained side of the plywood. I used 1 inch screws for this and had to put a lot of screws on one end because these planks of wood are not perfectly flat.
I put little pats on the bottom of the wood so it can slide around easily and not scuff up the hard wood. They’re meant for the bottom of chair legs but they work just as well here.
The rope:
This is a nylon rope 25 feet in length and it wraps around twice. To hold it while I wrapped it around there are two nails on the back side and one nail at the other end of the rope on the front. To secure it I used one inch screws on each corner on the sides so my hand wouldn’t accidentally hit them.
It isn’t perfect but it is mine and I built it to what I wanted in a few days. If you have any questions just put it in my ask box.
Time for training!
