it’s Indigenous People’s Day in Taiwan (8/1)!

since the 1980s, indigenous peoples in Taiwan had been campaigning for the Republic of China government to change the derogatory/discriminatory term “山胞” (‘mountain compatriots’) to “原住民” (indigenous peoples). President Lee Teng-hui included the change in the 1994 amendments to the constitution and it was ratified on August 1, 1994. To commemorate this day, the Chen Shui-bien administration officially designated August 1 as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in 2005.

If you love aph taiwan, or taiwan in general, please don’t forget that 228 Incident is a historical scar that still has yet to heal properly. don’t forget that 228 is a significant moment of taiwan’s history– one of the most painful, in fact. don’t forget 228. 

many people seem to characterize taiwan as a very cheerful character because of canon, but present-day politics aside, taiwan has a pretty painful history and I think that’s an important aspect to consider.
