Since I made that post about PreP I’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback which is good to hear and see. I also have been getting a lot of questions so I figured I would make it simple and answer majority of your questions and/or concerns in a single post…
#1 Does my insurance cover PreP?
- It completely depends on your insurance. I have friends that pay $0 to $100, but there is no way for me to know. My insurance covers most of it and I only have to come out of pocket $15/month. You can simply call you insurance company and ask them how much Truvada cost and they will let you know. That’s what I did before I decided to go through the whole process.
- The way it worked for me and I’m sure majority of people is you have to go see your primary care Doctor and request to be put on PreP. The Doctor will then right you a referral to see an Infectious Disease Doctor. The Infectious Disease Doctor will then run some blood work to make sure everything is good and then right you a prescription.
#3 What are the side effects?
- Honestly there is no way for me to tell how your body is going to react to adjusting to the medicine, but for me I felt nauseated and was burping a lot like I was about to throw up. It happened for three days fading each day. My friends have just complained about a little upset stomach.
#4 I heard PreP is really expensive…
- Yes, I had a friend ask the insurance company or a pharmacist and they told him it was $1700/month without insurance. Though if you don’t have insurance, the company that makes Truvada, called Gilead, has a PreP Assistnace Program to help lower the cost for people that can’t afford it. You can google that for more information.
