Class. That's me, right here.
I had the honour of going to the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra tonight with my friend Martine, which was pretty fantastic. The repertoire for the night was Hungarian-inspired so we got a taste of some Brahms, Liszt, and the like. Most importantly though, we went as guests of the humble-yet-talented Conrad Tao, the guest pianist for this weekend at the CPO.
While I haven't gone to as many classical concerts as some, I don't think I've ever had as much fun or been as impressed with something billed as purely classical as I was with this performance. There wasn't a slow piece in the entire set, and wow - I have never seen anyone move their hands so fast in my life as with Conrad playing Liszt's Totentanz. If he ever comes back this way again, or I have the chance in another city, I'll definitely be checking out his performance again. That, and hopefully he'll let me buy him a cup of coffee to say thanks for invitation via Martine.
Wrapped up the night with a trip to Village Ice Cream. If you haven't Village'd before, you're missing out on one of the best-kept-frozen secrets in Calgary. I scooped up (ha!) a dish of their new and hopefully not limited Toasted Coconut Ice Cream, and it was better than... it was phenomenal.
Overall, I had a great night out. If you've never done the CPO or Village before, maybe give it a shot next weekend in combo - there's a Celtic-themed concert on, and people under 29 can get matinee tickets for $14 a pop at the CPO. I'm sure Village will have something green on the menu for St. Patrick's Day, too.
