A Message of Hope: Why We’re Giving Away TV’s First Trans Sitcom for Free

Ten years ago, a small, independent team of filmmakers and actors in Vancouver, Canada, made history. We created The Switch, the world’s first television show with a predominantly transgender cast in leading roles, created and produced by a transgender showrunner. It was a TV comedy about work, love, and the beautifully messy reality of life in uncertain times, centered on a community of trans and gender-nonconforming characters.

The Switch was a labour of community love, produced for a tiny fraction of the cost of a network show. It found a home on OUTtv in Canada and broadcasters in Europe, earning a brief streaming run in the US. But its creators always knew its reach was limited by traditional television. The people who needed its message most—the young trans person in a small town, the ally seeking understanding, the family member wanting to connect—never had the chance to see it.

Today, that changes. And in these times, it has to.

We have entered an era of unprecedented, open hostility towards transgender people. In the United States, the United Kingdom, and around the globe, authoritarians and oligarchs scapegoat trans people, pushing discriminatory laws and hate, until the very existence of trans individuals is threatened. The need for joyful, authentic trans stories has never been more urgent.

That is why we, the producers of The Switch, are taking an unprecedented step - another world first. We are officially placing the entire series into the Creative Commons, making it history's first TV show to be given this status by its creators

What does this mean? It means The Switch is now yours. It’s free for everyone, forever.

From the studio that brought you The Switch are casting for their new series a science fiction called Synthesis. 

Trembling Void Studios is now casting for its new series Synthesis. This project is working under a UBCP ultra-low-budget agreement. 

All Actors to submit a 1-2 min video statement about what they think makes a better world. Please also send your picture, resume and reel if you have one. Please submit all materials to [email protected] no later than Wed. June 9th by 5:00pm

This project shoots in and around the Lower Mainland. Tentative shoot dates are June 27- July 2 All roles are $150/day based on an 8 hour day.

ROLES:

A’ida — Flight Engineer (17-22F, Southeast or East Asian, South Asian, African, or Middle Eastern) A’ida is young, vivacious, mischievous, and intelligent. Her love of technology is eclipsed only by her love of getting away with things she’s not supposed to. She wears a headscarf at all times and often makes unsanctioned ‘updates’ to her uniform. 

A’ida was raised on a predominantly Muslim, technologically-driven Utopian aquatic world called Rumah. She was brought up to be a respectably disreputable part of her family’s “business empire” as it slowly converts from a criminal syndicate to a legitimate tech company. She has the sharp mind to be her grandmother’s successor but hates the thin veneer of legitimacy that her family believes is so important.A’ida views life as a grand adventure, and her arc is all about coming to grips with the fact that her actions have consequences. A fling with Xing leads to hurt feelings on his part, and the mutual need to keep working cheek by jowl in cramped quarters. Her constant tinkering with a weapons drone puts the crew in danger. 

She’s forced to shape up with tests and crises as what seemed like fun capers land her in more danger than she ever counted on, and when an accident leaves her badly injured, she confronts her mortality.

We aim for inclusive casting that represents the range of humanity. ALL looks. ALL sizes. ALL accents. Mixed-race actors, trans/NB actors, and actors with disabilities are encouraged to apply.We would love to find someone with a personal, family, or cultural connection to Islam. Tomas — Staffed Mission Security Specialist (40X, open) WOULD PREFER ACTORS ON THE TRANS SPECTRUM

As is the custom on his homeworld, Tomas’s gender is defined by his job (that of a soldier) rather than his sex assigned at birth. Tomas can be played by any gender-diverse spectrum actor who can self-identify as such. Tomas works for a large militaristic empire and just wants to finish his tour and get home to his wife and kids. His family values define him. Though he is a soldier, he’s not a stoic or a sociopath but the sort of functional team member who excels at life in uniform. Repeated front-line tours taught him that violence is unpredictable, unfair, and long-lasting. 

Tomas is the kind of soldier who prefers to only fire his gun at the range and prefers to prevent, circumvent, or de-escalate violence. Left without alternatives, he can and will neutralize foes—quickly, certainly, and from a distance. No duels, no machismo, just results. Tomas is gentle, powerful, and wise. He feels like someone’s dad, with all of the responsibility that goes along with that.

In the trailer, this role is Silent on Camera. 1-2 days. Ethnicity preferred. We aim for inclusive casting that represents the range of humanity. ALL looks. ALL sizes. ALL accents. We seek a gender diverse, trans, intersex, and/or NB actor. If you are anywhere on this spectrum, please indicate this in your application. Applications without this will not be considered. 

The Show: Synthesis - an optimistic science fiction series, out to illuminate the way out of this fraught, powerless ideological deadlock. It is set centuries after a large portion of humanity fled looming worldwide crises by seeking new worlds among the stars. Now their descendants find one another again only to realize they have culturally diverged almost beyond recognition – and yet that they must unite before an empire “unites” them by force. This future humanity, represented in microcosm by the crew of a tiny ship working for an underfunded nonprofit, must learn that divided we fall and that our differences - when honoured and celebrated - represent a strength that no force can overcome. 

Cooperating through difference shouldn't be a controversial idea, but difficult and isolated times have fostered an 'every man for himself' mentality across perspectives. Synthesis can show us that a fractured population can become stronger than the sum of its parts.

Community Talk: Queer Women in Film

Queer cinema is exploding, and there are more diverse representations of queer women on screen now than ever before, and yet queer women are still hard to find behind the camera. We want to celebrate some of the local filmmakers we admire and hear from them about their own artistic journeys.

Amy founded Trembling Void with a simple objective: redefine prevailing narrative standards by creating high quality yet socially responsible content. This quest has taken her to writing and producing The Switch, the world’s first transgender sitcom.

There she meets a host of interesting characters including, Antonia, her landlord, who is obviously up to something illegal, Zoey, a teen-aged neighbor who has no sense of boundaries and Sandra, the homicide detective living next door. Sü must decide whether or not she should stay out of the closet.”

In Search of the Next ‘Schitt’s Creek’: Netflix to Open Canadian Offices

The move comes as the Canadian government considers whether to force streamers to spend more on homegrown content.

"In the less than four years, Netflix says it has spent a whopping $2 billion on TV and film productions in Canada. Now, the company is deepening its investment in the country. Netflix announced Thursday that it is opening a Canadian office and hiring a dedicated content executive who will work directly with the nation’s creative community. It comes as the Canadian government is considering strengthening regulations on streamers."
