One of the things I love about Zadie Smith is how unromantic she is about writing. She talks a lot about how consistently reading and is at the heart of the life of a writer. She describes the craft of writing as one where you need to be good with being alone far more than the average person. I appreciate her words, because there is an honesty to them. Writing is not a constant tornado of creative forces sweeping you into realms of revelation, inspiration and manifestation. It can be the labour of lifting a single word made unbelievably heavy by countless forces outside of the page and finding where (and if) it fits. It can be straining all of the power and energy you possess at a given moment over a sentence, that you may or may not use - a line you may revisit again, and again, and again. Writing is aching with the sense of what needs to be said and pulling on your faculties to articulate what you are sensing. There are times when that is accomplished. There are times when it is not.
