A Way Home - Volkner and Sabrina (Medieval AU)
Sabrina couldn’t stop herself from smiling. She felt so safe in his arms, and there wasn’t a single thought on her mind, not anymore. All her focus, all her attention was on him. The princess sighed happily against his shoulder, thanking the Gods that what she had done was enough to save him. If she had lost him, she would have never been able to forgive herself. After all, it would have been her fault. If the prince would have struck him fatally, her guilt would have been overwhelming. Luckily, he was safe. Perhaps, pushing herself a little harder, she could use her powers for something else…

The series of events was beginning to take its toll on Volkner.
He could feel every muscle in his body ache and his head felt like it was pulsing, however, seeing that the princess was safe and sound made everything feel like it was going to be okay. With his thoughts in a happy place, Volkner found his eyelids had become rather heavy. They had traveled so far on foot and the encounter with the murderous prince left him with some blood loss and minor wounds. Sabrina’s words seemed to warm him over and soothe his wounds. “Oh, no I’ll be fine, just a small headache…” She rose from the bed, “What about you? I was so worried. You were bleeding so much, and I had no idea what I was doing. They didn’t teach me anything about caring for wounds like those. I….” Sabrina’s voice wavered. Before he could ask her what was wrong, Sabrina’s arms were wrapped around his neck and she pressed against his shoulder. While her actions did hurt him just a little, the warmth she gave off was a fair trade-off.
“…thought it wasn’t enough to save you. I suppose we can be lost in this hallucination together.”
Throughout his travels, Volkner had seen a lot of things and done lots of things. He’d seen villages razed to the ground, thieves meeting their end at his sword. Families reunited and families feuding. Crusades and skirmishes. But Sabrina’s words took his breath, never would he have thought someone would say something like that to him so genuinely.
He felt his face flush and had to turn away from the princess’ radiating eyes lest his face turn red. Volkner gathered himself and nodded at Sabrina’s words, “I feel the same way, but for now I need to find out where we are. You stay here and rest up, I’ll pick up something for us to eat.” He held the coinpurse that she took before they fled the castle all those days ago, the weight of the coins was still admirable after a few weeks of traveling. Thankfully, they came with them when Sabrina’s abilities took them far from the prince. “If you’re feeling up to it, you can come with me. But if your body still hurts then don’t hesitate to stay here. I need you to heal as fast as possible if we’re going to make it to the next province.”
The next province, Volkner hadn’t thought about that. What would happen to them once they crossed over? He wanted to stay by the princess’ side but, his lifestyle and choices weren’t exactly the kind that screamed “settle down”. Besides, she was royalty, surely there was some merit in that for the province. She could marry back into royalty and live a life that she deserved instead of roaming the lands with him. He wanted her to stay with him, but he knew that she deserved so much better. He turned to Sabrina once more and smiled, cramming those bad thoughts away into the deepest corners of his mind. “Are you coming with or shall you stay?”
