If your nude photos are posted online without your permission, Microsoft and Google want to know.

For years, most victims of revenge porn — people who have had their nude photos shared online without permission — basically couldn’t do anything about it.

According to one study, over 50% of all adults engage in sexting, and 70% admit to having received a nude photo online or over the phone.

And yet, despite the fact that we all (or at least more than half of us) do it, there’s still this weird, persistent, harmful notion that if your naked pictures get leaked or shared maliciously by an ex online, it’s your fault for taking them in the first place.

It’s completely backward, but sadly, the law seems to at least kind of agree.

As of September 2014, New Republic found, putting someone else’s illicit photos online without their consent was illegal in just 16 states, though laws have been proposed in more states. Not only is it typically impossible to prosecute the perpetrator, they note, it’s impossible to legally compel websites to take the images taken down most of the time.

But thankfully, Microsoft and Google — which operate two of the biggest search engines on the web — don’t think it’s your fault. And they’re finally saying “Enough is enough.”

i dont particularly care for the accusatory tone in the OP (because honestly, nude photos dont exist unless you take them, so yes there is a level of responsibility to acknowledge and own up to when your nudes get leaked!–PS: the person who leaked them is still a gigantic fucking asshole and its their fault for leaking them) but this is a cool, good thing that both companies are doing. unfortunately i wonder if that will open the floodgates for people just mass reporting porn sites for hosting “their” content even if it isnt true/theirs, or they consented to it and then just decided to up and say FUCK YOU PORNHUB, etc etc i guess either way it doesnt appear to affect the actual content, just how its brought up in search engines, and overall… yes. a good thing.

"when you criticize them they cry" hey mr old nobel dude lets not insult real scientists by lumping them in with sociology and anthropology and astrology. Those are the whiners not the hard workers including many women who are trying to cure disease and crack a higgs boson.

Yeah, that guy’s clearly a massive sexist. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that maybe he really has happened to meet some particularly incompetent female scientists in his own life, but even if that’s true, that doesn’t give him any right to extrapolate his own bad experiences to all women in science ever. And as a biochemist in particular… every time he calculated the kinetic properties of an enzyme (which is basically like the lifeblood of any biochemical investigation) he’d have been using an equation devised in part by a woman, someone whose contributions to biochemistry far outshadow his own, and who was a respected scientist long before he was ever born. 

I wouldn’t generalise all sociologists or anthropologists though… those fields lack rigour, sure, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have any worth or that there aren’t competent people within them. Astrology isn’t a science at all, either.

This ask has taken offensive at “female scientists are weak”, and replaced it with “female social scientists are weak”? That’s not addressing the sexism, just making it more specific. There are presumably some thin-skinned female chemists, some thin-skinned male chemists, some thin-skinned female sociologists, some thin-skinned male sociologists. It’s a personality thing. The point here is to call out the generalisations and stereotypes, not just redirect them.

It’s almost like if you show women already in STEM fields enjoying their jobs instead of screeching like an overbearing mother that conditions aren’t perfect for women, girls get interested in STEM.

American servicemen serving in the UK were issued pamphlets reminding them that the UK women had been in that war longer than the Americans had and deserved their respect:

So no one can object to poorly-performed research unless they have the time, money and expertise to carry out their own research? I don’t necessarily even object to anything this infographic is saying in and of itself, revenge porn is a serious issue and if it predominantly affects women then that should be acknowledged, but neither do I think it’s at all unreasonable to ask that the people who are presenting themselves as an authority on a subject have used fair, objective and rigorous methods to obtain the information they’re giving out.

Not “go conduct a survey.” Go take a survey. Their respondents were self-selected and mostly women. If people have an issue with that, they can participate more to get a better reading of the situation.
