She definitely didn’t have any doubts over the fact he was flirting now. He’d made it pretty clear, not only with the way he’d bonded with her over books, called her pretty and asked to walk with her, but asking how to get more ticks in the plus column left it as pretty undeniable. Darcy exhaled, a shy feeling overtaking her as she had practically no choice but to look at her feet as she walked.
“Oh, I don’t know…” she shrugged. “I don’t usually think about it.” Letting someone get that close seemed scary. How was she supposed to let anyone get to know her when she didn’t know herself? “It’s just chemistry, I guess. But being a good person helps. Being kind and considerate and genuine. Also giving me food,” she added with a playful smile. Was she flirting back? She didn’t know. Being friendly and flirting all became a blurred line, and she wasn’t sure if she even wanted to un-blur it.
“I love puns, and dad jokes. And anyway, the owner can hardly complain about you mentioning it if he named it,” she said, letting out a ‘pfft’ sound and giggling. “I'l definitely come and visit at your punny work place and we can talk all the Harry Potter you want. In the meantime, how about you be a gentleman and walk me home?” She gestured towards the direction of the pack house. “It’s this way.”
Carter watches as Josie looks at her feet and he smiles; he can tell that she’s getting more flustered with each moment. He lets a small chuckle escape from his mouth. All of it is just so endearing that he can’t help himself. It’s the longest he’s gone without worrying about the whole moonskin part of himself and it’s pleasant.
“Alright, being nice and providing food.” He strokes his chin for a second, pretending to think on it for a little too long. “I think I could manage that much.” He nudges her playfully as they walk. “I am a pretty solid cook.”
That is something he can actually do. He’s been learning since living on his own and working at the marketplace; he experiments with new recipes and new ingredients. Six months without much to do, he was bound to pick up some skills.
“And I would appreciate the company, a lot,” he says, “I love the store but it’s not exactly the busiest and it gets a little lonely.”
He watches as she gestures towards, what he is assuming would be her house. She hasn’t been assertive much since they started hanging out but he likes it. He finds her shyness adorable but knowing when to take charge is never a bad thing.
“Yes ma’am.” He bows and motions his arms in front of him to indicate letting her pass. “Lead the way.”
