No one was entirely certain what had become of the bright-eyed heir to the throne. Some said his abdication, his disappearance from court, was a gesture of romance, the irresistible pull of love for the beautiful female woodward that could be spotted traversing through the forest accompanied by her buoyant pack of hounds. But others found such faith driven from their minds by the anxious weight of something sinister. They spoke of a waking madness, passed down through the blood of the throne, that at times had seemed rekindled like red-hot flames in the blue irises of Prince James.

Even after the prince had vanished, and the king-less land fell into disarray, some would vow upon fear of death that they had seen a shadow stalking through the villages in the night. None knew who this Vagabond truly was, save for those who met him in the darkness, but theirs was a knowledge short-lived, attained only through flashing pinpricks of ice and fire in the darkness before their lives were extinguished.

FIGURES OF NORSE MYTHOLOGY: FREYJA

Foremost of the Vanir goddesses, Freyja symbolizes fertility, love, and beauty. With her father, Njord, and brother, Freyr, she came to live in Asgard as a sign of peace after the war between the Aesir and Vanir. She taught the Aesir Seiðr (magic), which was commonly practiced in Vanaheim. Freyja is also associated with war, dividing slain warriors with Odin; half went to Valhalla while the other half went to her hall, Sessrumnir.

MYTHOLOGY : RAN, THE NORSE GODDESS OF THE SEA

The goddess Ran, whose name means “robber,” was as cruel, greedy, and insatiable as her husband. Her favourite pastime was lurking near dangerous cliffs, where she enticed mariners and cast her net. Having entangled the men in its meshes and broken their vessels on the jagged cliffs, she would calmly draw them down into her cheerless realm.

Bäckahästen (The stream horse) is known for using its ethereal beauty and strength to lure children to climb onto its back and then drag them down into the dark and murky waters of streams and ponds. It does not matter how many children climb onto its back, for it always grows longer. Only by casting a piece of steel between the horse and the water can the spell be broken and the children saved.

Sjörån (watchers of lakes) guard lakes and ponds and all that lives within them. Unlike their sisters, skogsrån and skeppsrån, sjörån are much more protective and vicious. They will not tolerate anyone who tries to catch their fish or otherwise disturb the waters, and they will not hesitate to drag fishermen down into the murky depths of their lake to drown them.

Skogsrån (watchers of the forest) are mysterious women who guard the forest and all its creatures. Seen from the front they are unearthly beautiful, but their backs are hollow like old and rotten trees, and they often have the tail of an animal. To protect the forest, they seduce and sleep with woodcutters and then steal their souls, leaving them empty husks of their former selves.
