Subdisciplines of psychology
I had to do this at work, and I thought that maybe someone would find this useful, like writers or people who think about studying psychology.
It’s a list about the subdisciplines of psychology, with a short definition and a few examples on topic areas. I only included the “big” subdisciplines (which also happen to be a part of my curriculum), so the list is not exhaustive.
General psychology – This field studies psychological features that all people have in common (e.g. emotions, perception, memory, learning, motivation)
Developmental psychology – This field studies how humans change over the course of their life (e.g. cognitive developement, identity formation, self-concept, language acquisition)
Differential psychology – This field studies the differences between individual people in regard to psychological features (e.g. personality, intelligence, creativity, interests)
Biological psychology – This field studies the relationship between biological processes and experiencing & behaviour (e.g. consciousness, sensation, emotion, control of movement, medical disorders like Alzheimer, Schizophrenia or drug addiction)
Social psychology – This field studies the effects of the (actual or imagined) presence of other people to the behaviour of an individual (e.g. group dynamics, persuasion, interpersonal attraction, attitudes)
Educational psychology – This field studies human learning (e.g. test anxiety, learning disabilities like dyslexia, motivation, intelligence, aspects of teaching)
Psychological diagnostics – This field studies how to asses psychological features through scientific measures and methods (e.g. quality criteria, behavioural observation, test development)
Clinical psychology – This field studies the biological, social, developmental, behavioural, cognitive and emotional basis of metal illness, as well as the effects of mental illness on experiencing and behaviour (e.g. phobias, therapy, classification (ICD-10, DSM-IV), depression)
Health psychology – This field studies the preservation of health, including the research and development of health-promoting and prevention measures (e.g. stress management, coping, psychoneuroimmunology, ecopsychology)
Work and organizational psychology – This field studies the experiencing and behaviour of people in their work environment, as well as the interactions between the individual and the organisation (e.g. commitment, work-life-balance, team effectiveness, occupational stress)
