Representation. Matters.
Going into It, my expectations weren't high. After all, it's an adaptation of a book whose sole female character is largely defined by sexual violence and
An insightful reading about how a token character from the 80s can have new power, impact in a modern film.

“Amazon declined to comment” doesn’t bode well.
The Variety article also originally completely failed to credit Terry Pratchett as the co-author of the book, and only corrected it after both he and Terry’s reps noted it.
I get the feeling they tried to jumpstart the apocalypse and published before they were supposed to, based on Neil’s being a bit tetchy in his tweet - on all the American Gods news he’d basically retweet seconds after the original story “broke.”
It was Variety leaking the story. And yes, I was tetchy, as were we all. It’s not the way you want the news to go out, and there are lots of people making this and lots of voices that weren’t heard…
Here’s the actual press release from the BBC, that went out today: http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2017/good-omens
and here are some quotes from Rob Wilkins, about what Terry would have thought,

It’s a shame when media ‘breaks’ a story badly, missing key voices and credits and details.
...but I’m too busy being excited about this happening! Hooray for Neil Gaiman and Good Omens and the wonderfulness of what this will be!

This is the kind of joy everyone should have a bit more of in their day.
Can people who don’t live in Austin vote for this guy’s reelection?
Of course, the company didn’t phrase it that way because it would have to spend another $11 million cleaning up all the mess from the white people’s heads that exploded.

For years now, the latest console generation has been coasting on the idea that more raw power means better games. The PS4’s newest exclusive, Horizon: Zero Dawn, is the rare game that delivers on that promise.
“To play Guerilla Games’ Horizon: Zero Dawn is to feel awe. Awe over sheer technical wizardry and its ability to transport you into a new world. Awe over discovering gargantuan mechanical dinosaurs and gradually uncovering the mysteries of a lost civilization. Awe over the fact I have never seen so many kickass women in a first party big-budget game, much less this many people of color in key roles. I often found myself pausing the game just to marvel at it all.“ Well, colour me excited!
I am always thrilled to see games made with passion, with skill and with commitment; I’m even happier when those games feature a strong female protagonist who is notable for something beyond her bust size. Can’t wait for our copy to arrive!!

Epic Fantasy that isn’t just completely pale? Truly? *giddy little dance* I can hardly wait.

Today in “things that make me happy” - beautiful and joyful representation of LGBTTQ* in mainstream gaming. Tracer is the most visible of the characters in Overwatch, and has been the centre of the advertising and box-art, and the comic celebrating Christmas has (SPOILER ALERT) her trying to find the perfect Christmas gift for her girlfriend. It’s not touted or given fanfare or any sort of flourish. Instead, it’s part of who she is.
Blizzard promised back in 2015 that they would have multiple LGBTTQ* characters in Overwatch, so this is just the beginning. However: it’s a beginning. And that makes me happy.
so apparently, monocles became a popular fashion accessory amongst lesbians in the early 20th century. there was even a lesbian bar in Paris in the 1920s named Le Monocle.
#bringbacklesbianmonocles2k16
have some pics. le monocle was a wild, wild ride.
I am VERY into this
If you’re bringing this trend back, make sure you’re staying safe and sanitary. Sharing monocles is just not safe in this day and age! http://hivemill.com/products/gentlemans-monocle
Wynonna’s super supportive but totally lowkey about the whole thing wink at Waverly
Also - finally a non-straight character who doesn’t get killed! Bring on the immortal lesbians!
For Sunspring's exclusive debut on Ars, we talked to the filmmakers about collaborating with an AI.
Well, based on this short film, SF writers’ jobs are safe. On the other hand, we clearly need to use narrow AIs for all absurdist art from now on. I’m also super-impressed with what the actors were able to do with the script. An excerpt from the AI’s interview during the Sci-Fi London awards show: What do you think of your historic nomination against human opponents in this contest? I was pretty excited. I think I can see the feathers when they release their hearts. It's like a breakdown of the facts. So they should be competent with the fact that they won't be surprised.
What is the future of machine written entertainment? It's a bit sudden. I was thinking of the spirit of the men who found me and the children who were all manipulated and full of children. I was worried about my command. I was the scientist of the Holy Ghost.
What's next for you? Here we go. The staff is divided by the train of the burning machine building with sweat. No one will see your face. The children reach into the furnace, but the light is still slipping to the floor. The world is still embarrassed. The party is with your staff. My name is Benjamin.
Ever since that day, Sharp and Goodwin have called the AI by its chosen name.
nuttydame replied to your photoset: I won’t get a chance to watch Castle tonight, but…
DID??? THEY ACTUALLY SAY THAT??? IF THEY DID I’M SO EXCITED AND I WANT TO SEE THE CLIP.
I HAVE BEEN RELIABLY INFORMED!!! I ALSO AM EXCITED (obviously) AND WILL FOR SURE WATCH THE CLIP OVER AND OVER.
When we saw it, I squeed and announced that it needed to be gifed RIGHT NOW.
“News Release Library and Archives Canada’s major acquisition of the declassified journals and military records of Canadian supersoldier James "Logan" Howlett April 1, 2016 – Gatineau, Quebec – Library and Archives Canada (LAC) Logan was born in 1882 in Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada, to wealthy landowner Elizabeth Howlett and her grounds-keeper Thomas Logan. Logan’s journals provide valuable insight into his early life in Canada, including work as a miner in a British Columbia stone quarry, a fur trader for the Hudson's Bay Company, and a homesteader in the Canadian Rockies. His military career spanned multiple conflicts, making his personnel records an unprecedented study in Canadian military history. Logan was gravely wounded in action many times, and gained a reputation as a gritty survivor. Quick Facts • WWI: captain in the Canadian Armed Forces (Devil's Brigade). Fought at Ypres in 1915. Wounded by a sword through the chest. • WWII: Returned to the Devil’s Brigade in the Second World War, as an allied spy and paratrooper for the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion during the Normandy landings on D-Day. • Cold War: based in Ottawa and Calgary, worked for both CSIS and the CIA. • Logan later changed his operative name to ‘Wolverine’, and worked with various NGOs. Why is Leslie Jones’ character the only non-scientist in the group? Why is she getting framed as the ‘street smart’ character — the one who supposedly doesn’t have as much technological know-how as the other three women on the team? In other words, why is the 2016 Ghostbusters rehashing the exact same tropes as the original Ghostbusters did with Ernie Hudson’s character?
So … Why Is Patty the Only Non-Scientist in the New Ghostbusters? (x)
I have been thinking this all day. I’m really tired of the race language of black = street. Why can’t we have Patty as the engineer, or quantum physicist?
