So yes, here comes Another Angry Text Post About Mercy and Supports in General and The State of Overwatch™. Hear me out.
Frankly, I have been worried about the state of Supports in Overwatch since the start of the game - after all, at launch, we only had 3 healers: Mercy, Zenyatta and Lúcio. Now with Ana, that total is 4.
With the nerfs and changes and reworks that have been going on for the past few weeks, I feel like Blizzard is going in a direction that is going to change the entire game (and in my opinion, for worse), in the sense that there are not going to be any ‘real’ Support characters.
You see this especially in one of Blizzard’s other games Heroes of the Storm. You have designated roles, as we do in Overwatch, but almost no character in HotS has a true ‘Support’ or ‘Tank’ feeling to them - to the dismay of a part of the fanbase. This results in a meta and gameplay style that is focused solely on DPS, burst damage, sustain (who can survive for longer) and ‘lifesavers’ or ‘clutch healing’, aka healing only to keep a teammate alive during a teamfight for a short amount of time. I feel like they are trying to force this type of gameplay upon Overwatch, by focusing on reworking and nerfing Support characters. Reworking a character like Mercy who is going to be healing 99% of the time and changing her ‘supportive’ ult into something that will instead turn her into a massive focus-point for the enemy team, could be categorized as ‘supportive’ (it draws away the attention from the rest of the team), but it is not fun to play.
With characters like Junkrat getting major buffs, Roadhog being able to fire faster, D.Va getting missiles, Doomfist flying and punching, Genji’s and Tracers flying around the map and Sombra’s hacking left right and center - Overwatch has become an even more chaotic game than it was, and it’s going to get even worse if they are going into the direction I’m afraid they are going - that is, making Supports less and less about mainly healing, and more and more about healing as a means to keep your team on the brink of death and have them dish out that extra burst of DPS.
It is not even necessarily only the case with Supports. Tanks, too, are being changed into larger, perhaps a bit less effective version of DPS’. The way I see it, looking at the changes over the past few months, they are actively trying to make the game centered around who can kill the fastest - who does the most burst damage, and who can stay alive for longer.
I am seeing a lot of (especially higher ranked players) complain about Mercy’s pickrate. Yes, she’s in every single game (arguably, so is Genji, or any other hero in the meta, but alas). It is not the Support players’ or Mercy’s fault she is one of 4 healing supports - 1 of 2 main healers in the entire game, and the only main healer viable in the current meta, with a roster of 25 heroes.
There is a large lack of Support characters, and they are trying to make up for it by reworking existing characters. The way Mercy works now is a totally different playstyle that could have easily been worked into a new healing character. Mercy could have been reworked in a way that changed the way her ress worked, slowed down her ult building, et cetera.
It’s not only about Mercy. Sure, they changed my favourite character into something I do not like, but it is something for all Support players - even Tank players. The spammy, fast-paced nature of nerfs and buffs alike that have been going on for a while, are not my cup of tea, and I’m sad that this seems to be a route Blizzard is taking.
