To think that the first time I would break any part of my body, it’d be because of a horse, en-route to meet the Tsaatans of the Zuun Taiga in North Mongolia and one of the most amazing places I’ve ever been to. 2018 had been a heck of a year. I moved to my own apartment, moved on to a new job and visited #andrewyouthdevelopmentcentre in #Burma for the first time in August. Andrew Youth Development Centre is a home and orphanage at Nwe Gwe, Pegu, somewhere along the outskirts of #Yangon that is a refuge for children and youth, many of whom are from the Rakhine, Chin and Shan States who have been orphaned, abandoned, displaced by war or sent away by their family due to poverty. And it’s here that I’ve come to know the most amazing kids ❤️. This time I’ve been blessed to be back again to spend the best #countdown and new year’s day of my life. Just a year ago I would have never imagined I would see a Chinese calligraphy piece of mine printed in an exhibition catalogue, but... here it is 😂. Strange, but true. My piece will be exhibited with the rest of the students of veteran calligrapher Mr Pan Wei Qiang. Spent my last night in Yangon reading these letters from the kids. The pile included boxes of folded stars made with lined paper torn from school notebooks and a teddy bear a little girl insisted on giving me. That’s probably the only teddy bear she owned. Made me realise how little they have but how much they are willing to give. Zin Zin, one of the grade 10 girls, apologised in her letter for not being able to give me a big present (she drew me flowers instead). That, is the best present I could have gotten ❤️. Someone told me early on in the trip that these kids showed him how one could own nothing but could have everything.
