Mtg Flash Fan Fiction Prompt (Week 11)
Hello everyone! I’m strongly considering changing the upload time so we can get more visibility. Starting next week, I think I will try to upload on Sunday morning, we’ll see how that goes!
Now, back to the present! Wotc announced sometime ago that Direct Challenges (aka play with friends) would be coming to Arena on the 15th, which is in a few days! To celebrate this new opportunity to beat up our friends, this week’s prompt is dedicated to a card that very well represents (albeit symbolically) the shift that will happen in my (and everyone else’s) mtg-enthusiasts friend group. We’re going from sharing our experiences of playing against other people to… murderizing each other. So! No card could be more appropriate than the Aftermath sorcery Start///Finish from Amonkhet!
Oof. Things turned really dire for these two. Presumably Finish occurs during the Trial of Ambition, but who knows? And also, I want to be a little lax with the rules this week. If you don’t want to write a story for the characters in Start///Finish, write an mtg story about Friends to Enemies! This blog is about writing stories for cards that don’t have them, but who am I to stifle potential ideas in favor of strict rule adherence? So go wild! I personally cannot wait to bawl my eyes out at the dramas you will submit!
Here are the two pieces of art for the card (Start is not the full piece because it was formatted kind of weird. Thanks, Tumblr)!
Reblog this post with your submission and tag it as #mtg flash fan fic so it can be found easily, and remember that this is flash fiction, so your story can’t have more than 1000 words in it! Also, remember to include this note at the beginning or end of your work: “[Title of your Fan Content] is unofficial Fan Content permitted under the Fan Content Policy. Not approved/endorsed by Wizards. Portions of the materials used are property of Wizards of the Coast. ©Wizards of the Coast LLC.”
Please reblog so we can reach as many people as possible!
-The Price of Worth-
They were raised together. They grew up together, ate together, fought together. And until that day, they had survived together.
Pytamun remembered the day he had met Atum for the first time, saw him as something other than another face in the crop. They had just come out of the Trial of Solidarity, the entire crop surviving that first challenge with barely more than scrapes. They each bore Oketra’s cartouche with a new sense of pride, and her words echoed in their hearts; “You will succeed as one or fail as many.”
After hearing such things, it was no surprise that the crop would try to draw closer together, to understand each other better. So Atum sat beside Pytamun at the steps leading down from the trial, and they spoke. They had saved each other’s lives once or twice in the trial without knowing who either of them was, and this only fostered their camaraderie. Stories were told of their early years, stories that lined up so much they may as well have been telling the same tale.
It was decided. As one of the suns began to set, as Atum wrapped an arm around Pytamun and they laughed over how close they had been all their lives without realizing it, Pytamun said the words that every initiate said eventually.
Gave me chills! I like the inclusion of Razaketh, it gives the demon something to do while the Promised Day inches closer: make sure the initiates behave as planned by dividing those that seem too close together. Very nice touch, and it makes the story of Atum and Pytamun that much sadder.
When will we get to vote on the winners of the Halloween special?
Well. Only @goblins-choose-to-live participated, so... they definitely won. Do people still want to vote on which story they preferred?

Mtg Flash Fan Fiction Prompt (Week 10): Halloween Special!
Hello everybody, welcome back to a new prompt! Halloween is tomorrow, so I thought I’d hit everyone up with something a little bit special. I’d like you all to choose a card and write flash fiction around it in the spirit of Halloween aka the creepy goth holiday. Naturally, I’m assuming the card you base the story around will already be halloween-y by itself but hey, if you can take a regular card and make a creepy story around it, props to you!
In order to incentivize people to participate in this week’s edition of #MFFF, I will be giving out a few very small prizes to the top three best stories, as selected by readers through polling!
The prizes are:
1) 10$ worth of candy delivered to your address;
2) A flash fiction written by yours truly about an oc of yours or existing character in Magic of your choice; and
3) a decklist built around the card you chose as prompt for your story!
In order to be accomodating, I will allow the writer of the top-rated story to choose their reward out of the three, and the writer of the second-rated story to choose between the two remaining ones. I am aware that the prizes themselves are not fantastic, but hey, free stuff amiright?
Submissions for this prompt will be accepted until November 7th at 11:59pm Pacific Time. There will then be another week during which people will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite stories (Probably by ranking them in order of how much they enjoyed them, I haven’t decided yet but that seems the most likely method, rather than simply voting for one) and then I will announce the winners and start working on the prizes.
Now that that’s all said and done… let’s get some writing started!
Please reblog everybody, we want as many halloween stories as possible!
IMPORTANT: I’m going to clarify two things, in order to avoid potential issues:
1) we’re talking FLASH fiction here, so max 1000 words, though I will allow people to go a little bit (and I repeat, a LITTLE bit) over; and
2) Only one prize per person (relevant in the case of multiple submissions by the same person or a total of less than three submissions in the entire contest).
Pretty sure this is as last-minute as I can get, but I had the idea and wanted to do it so here it is.
-Jodah and the Thing in the Ice-
And at that time, it was said that Jodah Himself tired of the ways of mortals, and set out to discover those who, like him, had also discovered immortality. Reasoning that all immortals must eventually grow tired of the madness of civilization, he set out into the Featureless Expanse (which was what the uneducated peoples of the time called the ocean, as it had been frozen over).
At the border of the Featureless Expanse, Jodah found a village whose entire purpose seemed to be to warn travelers away from the ice. They would spin all manner of terrible tale about the hideous beasts that lurked just beneath the ice, and though this was at a time when the ice was as thick and solid as it would ever be, they maintained a belief that it was only as thick as a sheet of ice on a bucket of water.
Jodah was told many sordid stories about horrific leviathans and roving skeletons held together by the cold and the malevolent will of terrifying sorcerers. But as he was a clever wizard, Jodah reasoned that he had heard no stories about enormous birds and so would be safe if he never set foot on the ice. So Jodah went out and found a glacier, and from this glacier he carved a magnificent boat which he enchanted to fly, and so he set out across the Featureless Expanse.

Creepy! And if Jodah himself is afraid, you should be too! Though I love the visualization of a magical ice ship going on adventures throughout an endless frozen sea!

-Rise of the Undercity-
In the darkness of the undercity, Vraska waited. Somewhere above her, Ravnica was in chaos. Isperia was dead, the guilds were in disarray, and the Guildpact was still off-plane. And all around her, the Golgari Swarm waited for her orders. She just needed her signal from the dragon, and then she would mobilize. Everything was going according to plan.
“Queen Vraska.” There was an imperious, haughty emphasis on the word ‘queen’ that Vraska could not help but raise an eyebrow at. With a single word, that voice had expressed an utter hatred for Vraska’s position, summing up hours of rants about what kind of guildmaster would take such a title.

It’s a small thing, but I love the explanation between the different phonetics here! I have a hard time saying more because this feels like I’m reading a canon Ravnica story! All hail the queen!

-Sonnet of a Howling Beast-
There’s a song that can’t be sung, there’s a pain
That cannot live in words. To be alone,
To be this thing whose face cannot be shown.
To bless the falling of sheets of rain
That hide this form from those few who remain,
And watch the sun rising o’er hills of bone.
‘Twas I who piled high these hills of bone.
My nature is not often spoken plain,
For those who look upon me ne’er survive.
They shrink from my strength and bow to my wrath
But they bear blades, so blood stains my jowls.
I must confess, I will leave none alive.
This is the fate of all who cross my path
And so in grief I raise my head and howl.

Beautiful sonnet for an equally beautiful creature! Very unusual idea, well done.
Thank you to everyone who reblogged and/or submitted!
I've been having some internet issues but I'll get to work as soon as I can!

Mtg Flash Fan Fiction Prompt (Week 9)
Hello everyone! I apologize for yet another error in the upload schedule, but such is life I suppose! In order for you all to minimize the chances of missing new prompts, I suggest turning on notifications for this blog’s posts (since I really only post new prompts, reblog submissions or post PSAs) or checking in every now and then every week. That aside, we are back with a new submission! A good friend of mine, @silvermoonmists , who used to play/read mtg a good amount but has since fallen out a bit of the circle, recently got to draft GRN with friends and she happened to find a character she already knew, only in this expansion this character isn’t exactly doing so well. Concerned, she asked me if I could tell her anything about them, but sadly, since so far we’ve only gotten a few side stories, I could not answer her satisfactorily. If you haven’t already figured out who this is based on the (admittedly vague) description and the limited cast of recurring characters in GRN, my good guys, gals, and nb pals, this week we’re talking about Trostani Discordant!
Trostani, as you all know, is an important and known character in Ravnica. This week we’re deviating from the norm a little bit, as the main focus of this blog is generally to bring lesser-known and somewhat undefined characters to your attention. But oh well! For those of you who do not know Trostani, the short story is that she is/are a single entity borne out of the fusion of three dryads: Oba, Ses, and Cim. These three dryads attempted to reach out to Mat’Selesnya at a time when her absence had left the guild in disarray, and in response the parun fused them with the World Tree. You can glean some more info about them in the wiki or you can just straight up read their Uncharted Realms. Here’s the card art!
Oh my, that is some incredibly beautiful art (seriously, check out the full sized version on Chase Stone’s site)! Anyways, despite knowing who Trostani is and why she is both one and three (wait, where have I heard that before…?), we… don’t really know what’s happened to her here. Why are the dryads in discord? What are they reacting to? Bolas? Lazav? Isperia? What kind of action are they thinking of taking? For as long as we do not have the official answer, we’re free to speculate and write as we wish!
To clarify, even though I’m showing you Trostani Discordant as the prompt, if you want to write a story that has pre-grn Trostani in it, please do!
Disclaimer: In order to avoid any assumptions that I am prescient, I must state that I got the info on what’s actually happening to Trostani from @bacejelerenvorthos. Here’s the Trostani piece for those who want to get right to the source. Anyway, on with the story.
-The Last Proclamation of Selesnya’s Voice-
“Everyone who crosses that threshold is our dearest friend,” Order declared to the assembled Selesnyans. She bore a great smile on her face, reaching out her arms to her joyous devotees. There were so many new faces in this crowd, so many new minds for the first time fully immersed in the Worldsoul. Some did not wish to stay, she knew that, and in their minds she softly spoke. *“Peace upon you, visitors. Whether you bow to sphinx or dragon, you are welcome here.”*
“Everyone who crosses it again is our bitterest enemy.” Life spoke softly, yet firmly, drawing the roots of the Worldsoul close around her trunk. She bid the flowers in her hair to bloom in time with the opening of her eyes, both an entrancing sight and a subtle reminder that nothing escaped her notice. To be so close to her, to reach out and touch Trostani as some of them were managing to do with their fingertips, was a joy that the other guilds could not give them. And why should they be allowed to take that joy away? They should stay. Why go back out into a world that would demand something that they were never meant to be? *“Put down roots, newcomers. Join your strength to ours.”*
Keep reading
Fantastic characterization of the three aspects of Trostani! Thank you for the disclaimer, I would’ve been quite spooked if you’d managed to be so accurate just off of an illustration. A great insight into what not only Trostani is thinking as war draws nearer, but also of what the other guildmaster’s and denizens of ravnica must be feeling. Let’s hope the gatewatch saves us all!

Mtg Flash Fan Fiction Prompt (Week 8)
Greetings everyone, let me welcome you back to a new prompt! Because of technical difficulties, I’m posting this a day and about an hour later than usual. I apologize! Today’s card is again from Guilds of Ravnica, it’s a card I was very excited to try out when it was spoiled, and, as @vorthos-blue-mage guessed and @askkrenko seconded, it’s Omnispell Adept!
Why did I choose this card? Well, the flavor text really tells you everything! A child prodigy expert in spellcasting and memorization that quizzes sphinxes?? I must know more about this person! Also I thought it would be interesting to choose a card that’s not explicitly aligned to a guild. Thematically she’s closest to Izzet I believe, but nothing in her design or magic confirms this, she is probably guildless (though if you want to affiliate her to a guild in your story that’s perfectly ok!!) Here’s the full art!
