There's so many tiny fandoms I'm in that barely, if EVER, get any love on conventions through cosplays or fan-merch! Humans made it to Tau Ceti first, and left behind a container with all their knowledge, including their solution to the Astrophage problem.
Then came Rocky.
Then came Rocky's obsession with the sole survivor of Earth's last Hail Mary.
my brain said the words rocky and grace but vaguely lars and the real girl-esque so. i will be doing my best to obey that!! i will try to update semi-regularly!
Rocky doesn’t come back to Erid right.
Of course, nobody had entirely expected that with how long he had gone, all that he had lost in the process - And, how he naturally different had been before Erid’s ship gently drifted into the silence of space, but still.
Nobody had been expected him to return not only with a solution, but with knowledge and proof of an alien race - One who had faced the same problem and left behind their answer for anyone else who took a chance on a trip to Tau Ceti, as well as all of their knowledge.
Information about themselves and the planet they called home, advanced science—
Though, Rocky insists that Eridians trump these “humans” when it comes to engineering.
He learns about radiation, which had been the cause of his crew’s deaths on their journey. He learns about time dilation, which explains why Adrian had aged many more decades than he had perceived while away.
He learns about things he will never truly know, like colours and the sense of smell, which is described as tasting at a distance.
In learning about the crew of this ship, the “Hail Mary”, Rocky gained a clear favourite early on in translating both their written and spoken language, in order to read and watch the collection of logs they left behind.
Doctor Ryland Grace, their science expert.
Rocky knew when he first heard that voice, even without understanding its words, that he would be forever changed.
Thinking about a world where Grace goes back to Earth after Erid.
It's a hard decision, and there's arguing and begging in equal parts, but in the end, Grace goes. And Rocky packs him a lunch. He fills the shop's computers with recordings of every story he knows and sings it lullabies. There are puzzles, handmade by his best friend for when the boredom hits. All over the ship, while he has endless time to explore it, he will find messages carved into the walls from Rocky. The engineer has already installed Armando by his bed, under strict instructions to watch him sleep. He will travel on an alien ship full of so many samples of Erid life, there will be a new Vat just to analyze them.
This time, he won't go to space unconscious and still terrified, his name a sticky note on a duffel. No, he will leave to the chorus of every life on Erid singing his name and trilling their goodbye. With every item on the ship a tribute of their love and respect, and of how well his best friend in the universe knows him.
This time, when gravity falls away, he will feel weightless.
it has occurred to me how much of a game changer “, question?” is for me as an autistic person! Because so many times, I will ask a question out of genuine inquiry, and people will assume that I’m being sarcastic or doubting them! By adding “, question?”, I am able to distinguish my real questions and even lighthearted humor questions from sounding disrespectful! This is ESPECIALLY useful in texting/commenting! Everyone say thank you, Rocky!

Manically built a foghorn from PVC pipe one day. Played with it for three minutes, ran back into his work shop, came back out with a couple more pieces and some painter's tape so he could change the tone and pitch at will. Laughed himself silly for ten minutes then got bored. No one knows where the horn is to this day
Got a high powered laser pointer and pointed it at the sky for awhile (making sure there was no planes or anything of course) to see if it would reflect off the low hanging clouds. When he got bored with that he got curious and pointed it at his chest hair. Singed off a couple pieces and was utterly stunned it hurt. Yes, there's a scar
Took apart a voice changer so he could install a new chip that was supposed to make him sound like a Dalek. It only kinda worked. Called it a rip off and no one has seen it since (probably got reused as parts for God knows what)
Was showing off his new golf club in the living room (it's a PHYSICS based sport, cut him some slack! … and the golf carts are fun...) and over estimated his overhead swing. Put a huge dent in the ceiling. It's still there. He still gets bashful when asked about it
Has a WALL of rechargeable batteries
Absolutely adores kitchen gadgets. He's had a popcorn machine (stopped using it when he realized just how detailed cleaning it was), a cotton candy maker (it lost its charm after a week), ice shaver (doesn't know where it went but longs for it whenever it gets hot out), several bread makers (“this time I'm ACTUALLY going to use it!” doesn't), a soda stream (he just likes pushing the button), milk shake machine with three nozzles (see popcorn machine for why he stopped using it), and so so much more. His ultimate dream is the hot dog toaster but he's too scared he'll be disappointed to get it (but still stares at them longingly whenever he sees one)
Was gifted a mini claw machine for his birthday one year. Didn't like the grip strength so he adjusted it himself then got bored when he won every time (again, no one knows where it is now)
Turns off his brain by watching infomercials. Falls for them every time. Begged Adrian to let him buy an induction burner plate for MONTHS. They kept saying no and that he'd get bored with it. Rocky brings it up all the time, esp during nonsense arguments (“This would have never happened if you let me get my induction burner plate!”) or he'll just sit there when they're having dinner and go “Induction. Burner. Plate.” with emphasis on each word, then go back to silently eating. Eventually got it. Cooked with it once. Got bored
Any mild inconvenience no matter what time of year “Christmas is ruined!”
I like to think that they put this up after Grace's inevitable death. And even though Eridians can only see surfaces, Rocky uses his device to "hear" colors and builds this himself so that in the future, when other humans finally reach Erid, they can see how loved their leaky space blob was (and still is).
