i wrote this over a year ago, was going to add more, now it's all been forgotten
i'm blogging! look at me go!
so i've been in freiburg just over a month now and i'm finally feeling like i have a place here. i'm still learning new things and making several mistakes everyday, but for a while i was pretty homesick, and the worst of that seems to have subsided at least for now.
i live in a student flat in an area of freiburg called vauban. our buildings were originally barracks for the french soldiers who were stationed here back i don't know how long ago... hence the name. the neighborhood surrounding me is bizarre as hell and, coming from ithaca, made me feel at home.
but really, i live right by an actual commune. the buildings are all really colorful, there are a bunch of old vw vans, buses, and caravan type automobiles parked a street over that a lot of the hippies and roma live in covered in "automkraft? nein danke" stickers on them and with garden gnomes greeting people as they walk by.
i have five other suitemates, four are german, one is a fellow ies student from the US who goes to UVM. living with germans has definitely been eye opening and shattered quite a few stereotypes i'd heard before. people often say germans are cold and reserved. ies told us not to be put off if our german suitemates often had their doors closed. all of my suitemates have their doors open
tried to post pics from berlin and prague here earlier but tumblr freaked out on me and now it's 3:30 am so those will have to wait a tad longer. what's another week
