Sobbing at the trapdoor scene when Fiyero tells Elphaba ' you saved my life '...the raw emotion in Jonny's voice is just beautiful. Even battered ,broken and turned into a scarecrow, Fiyero is still the boyfriend, the partner, who can see the uncertainty in Elphaba's face, plain as day, this being the first time she sees him after she presumed him dead ( the note didn't have details on what it was the price that he had to pay ), she's in disbelief, at seeing him alive and at the price he had to pay, that this is what it's come to , this is who he has become , that THIS is what her final attempt to do a good deed has come to, and she's shocked , and Fiyero being Fiyero, won't ever stand for his girl doubting herself (whether it's her not believing when he called her beautiful or whether it's her disbelief at seeing him like this) and being the amazing partner he is, he reassures Elphaba that he's ' good as new ' and that BROKE ME..because here's this guy, a former prince..who could have anything he wanted , who fell in love and chose to stand by it, damn any and all consequences, to him , this is but a small price to pay , given that they get to be together and even more poignant being him telling her ' you saved my life ' , because, out of all the benefactors of Elphaba's good deeds, Fiyero is the only who's truly grateful which shows that THIS is what her good deeds come to in the end , that no matter how much she was perscuted ,hunted, what not ,no matter those who scorned and spat at her for her attempts to do them good, here's the culmination , here's Fiyero who actually shows her gratitude , love and affection , and that's all she ever wanted.
And needless to say that Elphaba sees his uncertainty regarding his appearance, and quickly reassures him that he's beautiful, because he's the man she fell in love with,who chose her enough to sacrifice everything, who suffered a terrible price yet still managed to save her , and that's all that matters to her , it's a love that comes full circle when she tells him ' it's looking at things another way'.
Theirs is a love that transcends appearances and grand gestures , it's a love that doesn't need any declaration , it's a love that's come a long way in a short time , it's a love that found its way from showing up for each other , every time, it's love that wants to leave everything behind ( she finally leaves her hat because she's got all that she's deserved since day one and oh the irony ) and walk away hand in hand, and to paraphrase Jonny's words, it's a love that chose itself fiercely, freely and without regret.
