dorothy's very blunt "you'd be no worse off than you are now!" line to the Scarecrow is actually SO fucking funny in the wicked context like. imagine you just got tortured to death for protecting your witch wife but your witch wife brought you back as a scarecrow so you're alive now (yay 👍) but barely know how to move now and you're very clumsy (boo 👎) and this little girl helps you down from what was basically your crucifixion pole and you really play up being a silly scarecrow for her sake and when she says she's going to the Emerald City to get the wizard (who you KNOW is a fraud) to send her home you ask this sweet little darling if she thinks he might be able to help you too (you know he can't but you cant exactly tell her "hey so the bubble lady lied to you and the wizard can't help and you're in a GREAT deal of danger" without scaring her out of her mind so you figure that acting like you need her help in getting to the wizard is the best approach) and she basically says "...I dunno but you can't get much worse than THIS right? <:T"

like. dorothy did NOT mean it that way and only meant that it wouldn't hurt him if he didn't get any brains but like. fiyero still just got told (in the middle of the worst day of his life) that he's at rock bottom by a 12 year old. and the 12 year old is right. I'd start crying.

something about Fiyero immediately locking in with a plan to save Elphaba the millisecond he sees a little girl strutting down the road in Nessa's shoes, despite the fact that he was fully convinced that Elphaba would abandon him immediately due to his crippling self doubt and body dysphoria, is so. so sad to me.

like. he is 10000% sure she will leave him the second she sees him and he still spends days- weeks, even, planning everything and lying to people and doing everything to just save her a final time.

Honestly I love to think about the possibility that Fiyero didn't totally choose to be a soldier. I know we mostly assume he did, but how much evidence is there for that? And, in a story about lies and propaganda, how much can we trust that evidence?

He may have been contacted by his family and pushed to better the family name by going along with it all.

He may have been subtly--or outright--threatened by Madame Morrible.

He may have felt that not doing it after it was suggested would result in bad things, even without explicit or implicit threats.

Someone may have actually laid it out for him that anyone else wouldn't have his compassion for Elphie, and he would do well to just join up and climb the ranks so she wouldn't be tortured too horribly when they caught her.

And--least likely, but most gut-wrenching--he might have been quite literally forced. By his family, by Morrible, I don't know.

All I'm saying is, there's a real possibility it wasn't left entirely up to him. Especially given how willing his own men were to torture and kill him--it gives the impression they always knew, somehow, that he wasn't one of them.
