What is wellesley’s art history or journalism program? I’m trying to double major in those two topics and I really like wellesley but I’m not sure if it’s the right school for me based on those programs.

Hi! Wellesley currently doesn’t have a journalism program, but the art history program is pretty great! I’m not an art history major, but I’ve taken a few art history courses (all very incredible), sat in on a few others (extremely informative and taught by passionate professors), and know a lot of art history majors who are absolutely in love with the subject. If you have a facebook I could connect you with some majors so you can talk more in depth with them about the program. You can also check out more about the major from Wellesley’s website here.

Even though we don’t have a journalism program, many alums have gone on to work in journalism. We also have a few orgs on campus that allow you to hone your skills in all types of journalism media (from print to video). Hope this helped!

Where exactly in Health Services can I find the condoms and whatnot? I just want to strut in there and know exactly where to go so I don't have to ask anyone about it in person. Are the sex stuff visible right when you walk in?

I can’t quite remember exact locations, but I know there are multiple areas in Health Services where you can find internal & external condoms, lube, etc. There will be some small tables set up with pamphlets and condoms, but I don’t think they are right in the waiting room. The bathroom usually has a lot of stuff though, and I believe it’s almost directly across from the Health Services entrance (it’s been a while since I’ve been there).

Alternatively, if you don’t want to walk all the way to Health Services, the SHEs have set up little wall stations in each dorm with condoms, lube, dental dams, pads & tampons! You can find the stations usually in the laundry room of each dorm, but there is at least one exception–Dower–where the station is behind the first floor bathroom door (beside the staircase).

It might take a little bit for the stations to be refilled this fall, but that’s something you can count on throughout the year!

hi! i took both the sat and the act. my sat score is better than my act score, but i know wellesley accepts the act or the sat w/subject tests (i did not/will not take the subject tests. i just don't have time at this point). my question is, could i submit both my scores? or do they not care about the sat w/out the subject tests? thanks so much sorry this was long

You can submit the SAT without a subject test! I’m not sure how recent it was, but Wellesley has taken away the subject test requirement so you can just submit your SAT scores!

Since they are submitted through the SAT/ACT websites I’m sure you could submit both your SAT and ACT scores, but I 100% don’t think it’s necessary!

hi! I'm currently a senior and I'm considering Wellesley for my ED; it has the right mix of women's college, stellar academics, and enough name recognition to get me a job (i hope). that said, I'm not a perfect student and I'm really not that ambitious; I love learning, especially english and history, but I just hope to become an editor or work at a museum. Basically, I'm not a "Wendy." Do you think I could handle/enjoy Wellesley? (also, what's it like on the weekends?) Thanks!

Hey! (I’m not sure when you sent in this question, but I have a hunch I’m pretty late with this reply. Sorry!)

I am soooo far from being a Wendy as well, and that’s absolutely okay! Most students at Wellesley aren’t Wendies, even if sometimes it feels like the opposite. If you love to learn, Wellesley is a great place. You learn so much in and out of the classroom. Academics are tough though, and I’ve often felt like I was at my breaking point at Wellesley because I’m not a star student. That being said, there are a lot of resources that you can take advantage of to help you overcome the stress. Cultivating a good relationship with your professors, meeting regularly with your dean, and setting a schedule to balance between your schoolwork and the rest of your life are all great steps to take. 

I won’t say that there won’t be times that you feel bogged down with stress, but I will say that you will cultivate a support system that will hold you up at the worst of times and support you through it all. I think you can handle & enjoy Wellesley, because I’ve done it & I 100% thought it wouldn’t be possible.

Wellesley’s pretty quiet all days of the week, and even more so on weekends sometimes because many students just go into Boston for weekend fun. I’d say it’s what you make of it. Find friends who have the same sense of fun as you do and make weekend plans. Whether you stay in for board games, pizza, & movies in someone’s dorm or go out to see a performance at the MFA, if you’re doing it with friends, you’re bound to have a good time.

Okay, pretty sure this is asked all the time but how hard is it to date guys while going to Wellesley? I'm not at all bothered by the fact that Wellesley's all women - I wouldn't like to date someone from my own school anyway. And while having (or not having, for that matter) a boyfriend is not that big of a deal, I may want to have a relationship at some point. (I'm straight) How hard is it to be around dudes? Is it common for Wendies to date guys from other schools? Thanks!

Obviously, being around a ton of dudes is a bit more difficult at Wellesley because there are so few around, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t have many opportunities to meet men if that’s a priority to you!

Wellesley students can take classes at Babson, Olin, & MIT, all co-ed colleges, so you could meet men in classes. The Wellesley/Babson/Olin shuttle transports students to the three campuses for classes and events. The Peter takes Wellesley students into Boston, which has a HUGE college student population. There are constantly events in Boston catered to college students where you can meet people. Many Wellesley students go to frat parties with friends and have met boyfriends that way.

I’m not straight, nor do I have firsthand experience dating someone off campus, but it is relatively common for Wellesley students to have off-campus boyfriends. The Peter can be a bit of a hassle (it’s an hour commute into or back from Boston, which can be inconvenient), but you can easily make it work!

Hi, I want to go to Wellesley and this is my dream college and I really want to attend but how hard is it to get in to Wellesley ? What kind of GPA will I need to get into Wellesley? What kind of things does the admission office want to see? Also I'am a rising freshmen in high school:) Thanks

Although Wellesley is a “prestigious” college, there’s no set GPA that guarantees admission! People of all types of backgrounds apply and get into Wellesley. What’s important is that you enjoy your high school years & pursue what makes you happy.

The admissions office wants to see students who, yes, care about their academics and learning, but also students who have passions outside of the classroom that they pursue and thoroughly enjoy. Focus on your academics and do the best you can, but also know that your extracurriculars and application essay matter a lot. Wellesley wants to see well-rounded individuals who are passionate about Wellesley. My advice is to think less about your GPA and more about who you are as a person, why you want to attend Wellesley, and what your unique experience will bring to a place like Wellesley.

What are some dorm necessities? What do the dorms at Wellesley look like? What do you do when your roommate has "company" over?

Dorms vary a lot at Wellesley, but what you can generally expect in each double is two beds, two desks w/ chairs, a bookshelf (or shelves), two dressers, & a closet! Most rooms also have at least one mirror & a trash can. Doubles in the new dorms (Bates, Freeman, & McAfee) tend to have larger rooms with two closets! And doubles pretty much everywhere else can be hit or miss.

A lot of students tend to want lamps, mini-fridges, nice pillows, a mattress topper, power strips, & stuff to decorate their room with (like command strips, posters, fairy lights, pictures from home, whatever strikes your fancy)!

Most of that stuff is easily attainable once you come to campus (in fact, I’d suggest waiting to get most of your stuff until after you’ve arrived). There’s a sustainability sale at the beginning of the year where you can buy all of that and more at very reasonable prices.

Probably Biology or Chemistry but following the Pre-Med track. Wellesley has academic counseling for Pre-Med and Pre-Law students to help you pick the courses that will best prepare you for med school.

Hi! I'm a rising senior in high school and Wellesley is currently my top choice school. I wondered what your Film major is like particularly the production track?

hi! i’m a rising junior, majoring in cinema and media studies and concentrating in film and media production. the CAMS major is incredible, and even if you choose to concentrate in production, it is worth noting that you still get an incredible background in the history and theory of cinema. as for the production classes themselves, there’s a general consensus among CAMS students that ideally, there would be more options available. however, the classes we do have are all very hands-on and you learn a ton. for my production classes, so far i’ve taken intro to video production and intro to electronic music. (the latter is in the music dept but still counts for a production requirement, which is super cool and really speaks to the interdisciplinary nature of wellesley academics.) this fall i’ll be taking intermediate video production (which focuses on documentary production) and advanced new media (in which you develop your own independent project that somehow examines intersections of art and technology). 

there’s lots more that can be said about the CAMS major, so i’ll message you in a bit from my main blog just so you can let me know if you have any further questions about the department, the production track, classes, etc.

Pres. Johnson: Meet Wellesley Students with Disabilities Halfway

Recently, Connie started a petition to outline just how hard life can be for her community at Wellesley and to ask our new president, Dr. Paula A. hi, it's me again (the one who asked about humanities classes).just a follow up question: for classes with final exams instead of essays, do you know if the papers are due during or before the exam period? if before, do you know how early?

Hello again! Due dates for papers and midterm/exam dates will almost always be on the syllabus handed out at the beginning of the semester. If not, professors usually give you 2-4 weeks notice in advance of a due date.

hi! do you happen to have any idea if humanities courses (specifically 200 and 300-level women's and gender studies classes) usually have a final paper or a final exam? any info about usual mark breakdowns would be greatly appreciated. thanks :)

The majority of 300-level humanities classes have final papers. Most 200-level classes have final papers too, but there are several that have final exams. Grade breakdowns can vary from class to class, but for humanities it’ll usually be 10-15% attendance/participation, 15-30% weekly assignments, and then 20-30% each for midterm papers, presentations, and final papers.
