EMMA 2020 | Autumn de Wilde
“Within half an hour, he had passed from a thoroughly distressed state of mind, to something so like perfect happiness, that it could bear no other name.”
– A brief journey into Mr. Knightley’s thoughts in “Emma” by Jane Austen. Images from Emma. (2020)
“…If for some reason a woman was ungloved, proper etiquette called for the gentleman to remove his gloves before taking her hand, as it was discourtesy to behave otherwise.” — Glove Etiquette and Rules in the 1800s
It’s really important on a period movie for the actors to understand how people related to each other then. We wanted to show the young people pushing boundaries. Like in the hallway, before Mr. Knightley and Emma danced, Anya really wanted to have her gloves off in the scene—normally she would have always worn gloves—so we asked Maria [Clarke, the etiquette expert], “Can she have her gloves off?” And she said, “Yes, if she had just eaten, she wouldn’t have put them back on yet. And since she’s so distracted by the way she’s starting to feel, it made sense.” — Autumn de Wilde

I’ll speak love’s truth with oak and ash for you Sing through April’s tears I will weave the bonny flowers of spring for you I will walk for years Oh blow the wind and come the rain and take my heart again Yes blow the wind and come the rain and come my love again All is for my mistress all is for my maid Sweetness that I took for sweetness that she gave to me My queen bee

“how long had Mr. Knightley been so dear to her, as every feeling declared him now to be? When had his influence, such influence begun? When had he succeeded to that place in her affection? .. There never had been a time when she did not consider him as infinitely the superior, or when his regard for her had not been infinitely the most dear.”
