Tina took pause (for once in her life). She could feel the back of her ears heating up, barely a minute into their conversation. If she (if Wendy) wasn’t careful, this would only end up making things infinitely worse. For once, Tina had just enough sense to not let that happen, even if she was already jumping to the worst conclusions possible.

No, Tina paused, looked carefully at Wendy and narrowed her eyes.

It all felt very different, Tina realized, now that she was on the outside. Defensive of Peter still, of course, but she wasn’t his shoulder to scream on any more. She wasn’t given the advantage of being a listening ear.

“What do you mean he thinks you’re together? He banished you.”

wendy was over the drama and hassle that peter pan brought to her life. he was exhausting and it was about time he realised he doesn’t get everything he wants just because he said so. 

“i mean exactly what i said” she shot back, not in the mood to deal with tina either “i’m well aware he banished me, but apparently he has decided i’m unbanished and that we’re together. i don’t like him like that, i lik-” she managed to catch herself in time. the last thing she needed was to give tina bell any more amo.

Tina remained behind Wendy, arms folded, face like fizz. She eyed her with suspicion, instantly jumping to the conclusion that Wendy must have been the one to upset Peter for them to have started arguing. (In the back of her mind somewhere she was ignoring the fact that knew that likely wasn’t the case. Not when she had felt Peter’s wrath so many times lately. But, you know, stubbornness. She really was trying to protect Peter in some twisted way, she just wasn’t very good at going about doing it.)

“Figures,” Tina snorted.

“Looked like you were having a real go at each other,” she remarked flippantly. It was daring Wendy to elaborate.

she was tired of the fights but not enough to cave in to whatever delusion peter had conjured up for himself. people weren’t toys he got to pick up whenever he felt like it. wendy was sure that tian was likely to give her an earful in the defence of peter which usually flowed into insults being hurled wendy’s way. it would be fair to assume wendy would react but fuck was she tired. 

“peter pan has nodded off to neverland again” would there ever be a time that she’d be free of him? it didn’t feel like it. “he thinks we’re together. i told him we weren’t. he didn’t like that”

Tina sobered up very quickly (or perhaps just had a mood swing so rapid it seemed that way) when she caught an extended glance of Peter Pan and Wendy Darling seemingly having a proper go at each other across the other end of the hall. It was her natural inclination to want to protect Peter at all costs, even when banished, and to completely loath Wendy in the same breath. She was miles away from them, of course, but it was clear as day that they were both upset over something.

Now, given banishment status, Tina knew that her appearance at Peter’s side wouldn’t have helped (as much as it pained her). So the next best thing she could do was wait for her moment with Wendy instead. (By wait, we of course mean she stalked her at a distance until she was out of relative view of the rest of the party-goers, at which pointed she appeared in her line of sight with a scowl so foul it could curdle milk.)

“Are you enjoying the party?” Tina asked, arms folded as she leaned against a shaded pillar.

after her run in with peter, wendy needed some air. she needed to get away from that cloud of nostalgia and negativity. she told herself that she did the right thing, she reminded him that she was banished and in a rare turn of events even came to the defence of tina bell of all people. wendy fled the scene of the showdown and furiously wiped at her eyes, refusing to let any tears spill. the fresh air hit her like a brick and it took her a moment to catch her breath. eventually doing so, she sat down on the steps and looked out into the night. 

hr head whipped round at the arrival of tina. bad things tended to happen to her when her back was turned around tina. then again, bad things happened when her front was facing tina. “i was until peter found me” she replied, too tired to put up a fight if tina wanted one.

he was rambling away to his hearts content while he walked with wendy. his genius discussion topics were cut short when wendy yelled at him. he looked at her like she had grown two heads “what are you talking about? we’re good” a nonchalant answer at best

“we’re fine. we’re together. we’re peter and wendy” he explained “now. come on, before we miss the rest of the dancing!” he said, trying to drag her onto the dance-floor disregarding the fact he had just dragged her to the bar.

despite how she felt about peter, genuine concern had trumped that. “peter, we’re not good. we haven’t been good for years” she started, hesitant to follow on with what she was going to say.

“we’re not peter and wendy, not anymore.” she spoke softly, desperately searching his face for some form of reaction to allow her to judge how to approach it further. wendy gently removed her arm from his “you banished me, you banished tina. tina fell in love, there’s nothing wrong with that. tootles is trying to hold it altogether between running the garage and monitoring you. we’re not kids anymore. no matter how much you refuse to accept it...it’s time to grow up, peter. you can’t keep doing this.”

all was well, he’d found her. or she found him more like, she was so smart. smartest around. “there you are!” he grinned, pulling her into a hug without thought. “we’re going to have a great night. we’ll have some drinks, we’ll dance, we’ll see tootles eat his body weight in snacks…” 

taking her arm, he lead her over towards the bar “you’ll be the belle of the ball and then we’ll party on until the morning. it’s all worked out”

concern and confusion was plastered over her face. 

wendy was startled at receiving a hug from him, unsure of how to proceed. this wasn’t peter. this was different from his usual chaotic energy “peter” she tried reasoning with him while he babbled on “peter” she said stronger than the last time “peter, stop!” wendy called and tried to yank her arm away from him. 

“where do you think we are right now? not location wise, but us?”

peter pan was currently the equivalent of a gremlin that had been left to its own devices and it had done nothing but cause chaos wherever it roamed. the longer he was left to his own devices, the more feral the boy got. and the boy was bigfoot in the woods level feral. 

living in a treehouse and with nothing to lose, peter barrelled into the ball with nothing but anger and a mission on his mind. anger? directed to everyone. the mission? wendy darling. 

wildly barging around with no regard for anyone else, peter was on the hunt for the eldest darling. “who’s idea was it for these fucking masks? i can’t find anyone for shit found here?!”

she had been looking forward to the ball. it gave her a chance to talk to people and have some fun. the past few months had been stressful enough with the carnival and every day life taking its toll. a night with friends was a night she needed. no drama, no fuss.

annnnd then all that went out the window as soon as she heard the insane ramblings of peter. “peter, will you stop yelling? you’re ruining peoples nights” she hushed him. “stop it”

Rachel beamed in response, certain that the power of smiling big enough would put Wendy at ease. Everyone should be having a good time right now! Not hiding away in the corner. Even as Wendy admitted to having trouble with other parts of the event, Rachel kept her cheery smile on.

“What do you mean?” she asked. “I can totally help if you want me to! Is it, like, finding the person? Figuring out your activity?”

she envied rachel’s ability to smile through it all.rachel was always so happy, it looked like nothing ever phased her. “i think i’ve figured out who it is” she said, double checking her notes “it’s more the social side. i’m not big on going to events like these but i’m trying to get better at them. pushing myself out my comfort zone is never a fun thing”

Ella raised her eyebrow, her hands moved from her hips to her side as she could see the anxiety emitting from Wendy. “Hun it will be alright, Travis is a lovely boy, and you’ll just have to ask him what event you will be going to.”

She took Wendy’s hands in hers - “Take one big breath and…exhale.”

she could appreciate ella trying to comfort her, even when ella didn’t need to “i don’t think travis is the problem. i’m more the problem” she admitted “i’m more books and academics, i’m not the best socially” 

wendy nodded her head, giving ella’s hands a squeeze. she took in a deep breath and exhaled as instructed. she did it a few more times for good measure and eventually felt her panic settle “thank you”

Rachel was absolutely loving this game, even if she hadn’t found her partner yet (and wasn’t getting to spend as much time with Toulouse as she wanted to). The best part was that she could talk to absolutely everyone here and get to learn little fun facts about them without the worry that they would find her annoying or think she was overstepping boundaries. If she could help it, she’d see every single person in the place just to talk to them, and hopefully figure out her clues along the way.

On her endeavour to talk to everyone, she spotted someone hanging around off to the side, scribbling notes on her card. They must be an expert! she thought, grinning excitedly as she approached. “Hey!” Rachel chirped. “How are you getting on with those clues?”

it was clear to wendy that while she was freaking out, everyone else seemed to be having the time of their lives with the clues. she knew she shouldn’t be so in her head about it but it was all she could think about. years of being the perfectionist was rearing it’s head. 

wendy jumped at the shout towards her “oh rachel, hey” she said, giving a weak wave of her hand “i think i’m getting on well with the clues, it’s the rest of the event i’m struggling with”

This really had been a grand ole time, y’know? Definitely the light at the end of the tunnel for Redwood. Travis hadn’t had to work a room like this in a long time either, looking out for tells and asking leading questions. It almost reminded him of the old days. When it came to the mysterious ‘Bookmark’ it seemed that fate wanted to bring together Travis and Wendy Darling for another run in. He certainly wasn’t complaining and hoped she wasn’t too disappointed by him and his lack of buttoned buttons.

They’d connected and were now waiting for the Wheel of Love to do its thing— “I don’t know about you but I’ve got my fingers crossed for frolicking with those flamingos,” he grinned, charming as ever. Where was the dramatic music when you needed it? Tick, tick, ti— A photoshoot! Travis let out a little laugh at the result. “Maybe next time to the flamingos but what do you think, Miss Darlin’? Will we go have a real life movie montage?” @wendydxrling​

for wendy who was not exactly the most social, she could laugh at her luck of being paired up with one of the most socially outgoing people in town. perhaps it’s a good thing and something that was needed to give her a push into being social more. if anyone had the ability to do that, she would put her money on travis. 

frolicking with flamingos seemed entirely bizarre but then again so was wendy singing up for this event. “you got a thing for flamingos, travis?” and they were off to the races, wendy darling had just made her first joke. a photoshoot for a woman that rarely liked photos getting taken of her? great. “sorry you didn’t get your beloved flamingos. maybe there will be a flamingo costume for you”

Ella was quick to notice the distress on the young girl’s face. Well Ella was quite young herself, but having a child had certainly made her age a bit with time passing.

“You okay Wendy, dear?” Ella said with a soft voice, hoping she wouldn’t startle the other. “You seem a bit up in the clouds.” She said with a chuckle - but she knew how stressful it could be if you weren’t sociable to attend such an event as this, she often spoke with Elsabeth about her struggles, so she felt like the two perhaps could relate to one another.

“Did you figure out who your date is yet?”

wendy stopped when she heard ella’s arrival. 

“uh yes? no? no, no i’m not doing okay” she stumbled through her admission. socially this was a navigational nightmare for her. “i think it’s travis, but i seem to be struggling with the social aspect more than the puzzle solving”
