An abacost (abbreviation for the French “à bas le costume”) was the national dress for men adopted during Mobutu Sese Seko’s government Authenticité/Zairianisation campaign. The Mao-inspired attire usually consisted of a two-piece tailored suit and a leopard print cap. Zairianisation extended state influence in the economy the intent was to nationalise foreign business interests in Zaire. The goal was to also rid the country of colonial influences and western culture.
