Aerys and Maekar's relationship will never not be funny to me. Baby Maekar probably spent so much of their childhood making fun of Aerys for being a nerd, and hanging out with their creepy ass uncle Brynden, only to have Aemon Targaryen as a son. And Aerys probably thinks it's karma, right, for all his teasing? And he feels bad for Aemon, having Maekar as a dad, and probably being mocked and criticized for not being a knight.

Except, Maekar loves his bookish baby. Aemon is his precious boy whose favorite pastime is sitting in his daddy's lap and being read the histories of Westeros and dragon epics. So what if he fumbles a bit on the training grounds? He already has Daeron and Aerion (Daeron was a knight at the trial. I feel like Daeron was more stable in his younger years so no concern to Maekar yet). Not all children are meant to be knights, nothing wrong with being a scholar like his grandfather. He says this proudly, ignoring his older brother, seething because for years this brat was calling him a eunuch because he was “swordless” for so long.

Best believe Aerys and Brynden was going to Daeron, and saying, "Hey, how about we send Maekar's son to the Citadel since he has so much potential. You were saying yourself that too many dragons are dangerous." And Daeron agrees and sends Aemon away.

(Maekar finds out about what they did, and Baelor and Rhaegal have to hold him back from beating the shit out of kin.)

(Lowkey headcannon that Meekar was mean to Aerys because he’s so close in age/same age as Brynden and felt slighted that Aerys always preferred his company over Maekar. Like Maekar was the youngest, but he was also Baelor‘s favorite and he probably was Rhaegal‘s favorite too so what the fuck do you mean, nerd, that I’m not your favorite as well????)
