stupid things you do as an artist: today i was ironing sheets of paper. it worked.
i couldn’t think of a better way to communicate this so its this . my struggle
the ride never ends
need to go back to the ancient ways of having an obscure little artist website and promoting your work by tacking it up on lampposts and bathroom doors of your local bar
every time i get even a little motivated to start posting my artwork on the internet again some fresh new bullshit raises its head out the dumpster. saw the meta ai crap today, did a long sigh, and i'm now trying to wrap my head around how to be an artist with a small business whilst not using these social media giants that near everyone is using and expects others to use too. the urge to just delete everything on instagram keeps getting stronger and stronger. but even my local art market that i'm preparing for requires that i promote it on social media. and where ARE all the artists supposed to go to promote their work that doesn't immediately scrape their data? and what do i do with this space here, this poor blog that i keep kicking around saying i'll revive it for years? i'm beyond tired and frustrated with all of this. at least i'm actually making art, even if it does just live in a shoebox in my room.
trying to put together a business card right now and feeling very much like the "graphic design is my passion" meme. my own last name has stopped making any sense whatsoever. half of these fonts look the same, and my eyes hurt. send help
An important part of making art is just not doing anything. Just letting weird stuff percolate. Absorbing more or less useless information and then pinning it onto a cork board like a terrible alcoholic detective but with no thread, just things pinned to other things and most of the things are just two word phrases like ANCIENT CRAB and DIRT LABYRINTH and MEAT CASTLE that don’t mean anything. Just moving through the world, making nothing, eating bread, having prophetic dreams and letting insane thoughts build up and up and up until they can finally crystallize into something that exists outside of your body and you can enter a blissfully thought free phase of your life where you just get to glue small objects to other small objects for 18 hours straight
Unfortunately the other part of making art is actually making it
anyone else ? is this relatable ??
If I knew how to draw it would be over for you hoes <- is an artist
I confessed that I had a burning desire to be excellent, but no faith that I could be.
Martha said to me, very quietly: “There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open.“
from Martha: The Life and Work of Martha Graham, Agnes de Mille.

opens box that reads "i wanna draw again". inside lies a note. the note says, "mental illness and difficult circumstances have taken years of interest, accessibility, and skill away from me. i want to forgive myself for that. i want to heal my relationship to my hobbies. i want to feel connected to something that once made me feel good, but the cyclic discouragement is difficult to overcome." i turn over the note. on the back it reads "wannta drawe sexy bodies awooga"
seems like this one really resonated with the artists who dont do art fandom
there’s no bad art! there’s no good art either. there’s no art at all because you haven’t drawn any
good grief, sitting down to properly analyze your art process and art style does make you go kinda feral though
