In the grand scheme of things, Simon walking in on Dr. Grace’s latest project should’ve happened earlier. The man got kicked out of the formal academic circles for a reason.

Years of enforcement and throwing people out of tall buildings that earned him the title of Butcher didn’t prepare Simon for watching a man being autopsied on a slab, some closed-circuit distillation happening on the side, and a pile of science fair projects to be graded on a desk.

“Oh! Hi there Simon! Rocky should be done fixing your gun,” Dr. Grace peeked from behind the curtain covering the dead man’s scalp, cheerful even with the red stained surgical mask and visor, “You should really take better care of that thing, Rocko almost blew a gasket at how gunked up it was.” Dr. Ryland Grace was the only human being who called Simon by name not by his street moniker.

Simon stared for a moment and asked, “Uh…what are you doing with the body?”

Dr. Grace stopped his work for a moment, held up a bloody gloved finger, and went back behind the curtain. Simon heard uncomfortably wet sounds and the clink of bone against bone. He now had a very good idea of what Ryland did behind the curtain. “Do you want the full story or the summary?”

“…Summary.”

Ryland thought for a moment and took off his PPE. Still as handsome as ever, Simon thought.

“John Smith here decided one of the Petrova experimental compounds was…ready for his consumption. Granted, I wouldn’t have gone ahead with human trials on this particular series but I’m not wasting an opportunity!”

God this man’s batshit and I love him, Simon felt his stomach flutter.
