Runaway Like Minds AU
i love imagining my Runaway au where Nigel and Alex both survive and never get caught by the cops or detectives. imagine if Nigel tried to shoot himself, but Alex messed up his aim and the shotgun went off into the ground instead. Alex would get furious because he wants it to be over. then he tries to shoot Nigel himself, only to realize there aren't any shells left. he ends up beating Nigel again, telling him it's all his fault, when in reality he's blaming himself. everyone keeps dying, and he keeps letting Nigel drag him into it over and over again. his mind is already so fucked up that he doesn't even know if he really wants Nigel to die anymore... but at the same time, he still does. but what really breaks him is that he'll never know if he actually would've pulled the trigger. after the empty click of the shotgun, there's only one thought left in his head: if there had been one more shell... would i have done it? that question keeps eating away at him. does he really want this nightmare to end, or has he already become too attached to it to ever let it go?
and Nigel... he'd take it as a sign. two failed deaths become proof that this is exactly how it's supposed to be. the first shot didn't kill him. this one didn't either. and even Alex, deep down, couldn't bring himself to let Nigel die, even though he tried to. to Nigel, that's proof of their destiny. they're meant to exist somewhere between life and death, to keep going, to keep carrying out what they started. throughout the entire AU, Nigel keeps getting into Alex's head, insisting that the reason Alex didn't kill him with his bare hands wasn't because of morality. morality has no place where destiny exists. you don't choose your actions—you simply follow the path that was always meant for you. and now that path is here, standing right beside him. after that they just run away from the boarding school and continue building their weird little templar cult or whatever lmao
