Hey so I was just looking for 1D fanfiction a while ago and I found your fics. While I do think you guys are good writers, I am just wondering why you think it is okay to write gay smut about them. They are real people, and I definitely think this is disrespectful to them.

Firstly, I’m a little bit confused by your situation - you say you were looking for One Direction fanfiction when you came upon and were offended by our One Direction fanfiction. I can only assume that you were on the hunt for heterosexual fanfiction, and our slash offended your sensibilities? If so, I guess I’ll have to be the one to break it to you - gay relationships make up a massive percentage of fanfiction writing and you’re going to have to get used to it.

Of course, it could just be that you were looking for 1D fanfiction of a more PG rated nature than what we put out. That’s completely cool. It just means that what we write isn’t going to appeal to you. However, you seem to be saying that writing about One Direction having sex with each other is inherently wrong or unethical. That’s where I’m going to take issue with you. Fanfiction is one of the least exploitative forms of pornography out there, and one of the only forms that is predominantly manufactured for women and by women. In my opinion, it’s the safest widely available way for girls to begin exploring their sexualities, especially when they don’t feel that they fit in to the traditional boy-dates-girl paradigm. An alternative to the visual pornography industry as it currently exists is something our society sorely needs in order to combat heteronormativity and female sexual repression. 

Finally, we inhabit a tiny corner of a site that I sincerely doubt any of the boys spend any regular amount of time browsing. We are doing our part to maintain the fourth wall. Now, I would never condone someone bringing their NC-17 gangbang to a meet & greet to have it signed - that would be creepy. But the fact is that the chance that any of the boys will ever see what we write is - blessedly - just about nonexistent. Even if they were to come across explicit fanfiction of themselves, I truly believe that the momentary discomfort it may cause them is worth the benefits that participating in fanfiction culture can serve to people, particularly girls and others who may not be satisfied with our culture’s dominant sexual narrative.

If you are looking for an institution to protest, I encourage you to look into the exploitative nature of the visual pornography industry.
