A Queer Analysis of Code Geass

So, after slaving away and having no life for the past week or so, I’ve FINALLY finished my epic analysis of queerness in Code Geass (complete with links to clips from the series to back up my claims, which is fun).

Premise: Using queerness as a lens, I analyze Suzaku and Lelouch as Othered queer rebels and how the homoerotics of their relationship is at the center of a series that inverts our gendered, political, moral and ideological expectations

Disclaimers: I’m not going to try to prove Suzaku and Lelouch aren’t straight by citing every homoerotic scene between them. I’m using queerness as a tool to analyze the series because, as it turns out, queerness explains A LOT. I back up all of my claims, but instead of assuming everyone is straight until proven otherwise, I get a lot more done with the opposite assumption.

The essay is VERY LONG. I broke it up into sections so you don’t have to read it all at once. It’s also written on a college level, so while it’s super gay, it’s also super academic. After this, my tone get very serious/formal (even about pimping Suzaku’s ass, which is, you know, the beauty of the thing).

People don't talk enough about the fact that in-universe Zero is a non-binary icon.

I mean, the general public doesn't know Zero's gender. The show has proven that the suit can be worn by men and women alike, and no one noticed the difference when C.C. played the role of Lelouch's body double, so there's that. And the mask presumably has some sort of a voice modifier. Hell, at one point a reporter explicitly states "We don't know this person's gender"!

I literally haven't even finished atsiam yet (finished ch5 today), but I couldn't help but think of this 😭 Idk why but I feel like Torrent would get cute aggression from his younger self, especially with past Waterboy feeling conflicted and jealous I can totally see Torrent being like super understanding about it and just hold nothing against his past self for being like it anyway ahem it's not super clean, but I'll probably be drawing them more in the future anyway and will make something more polished but I just wanted to get it out of my brain I love them sm

i don't think hannibal actually believes in 'eating the rude'. it's not as black and white as that. i think he believes in eating the rude who're not on his 'level', if that makes sense.

there is a sense of hierarchy in him, as seen in the exchange with abel gideon, and he says,

'it's only cannibalism if we're equals.'

he doesn't believe that abel is on his 'level', which is true.

will was inherently rude. i know we as a fandom joke about him having the pretty privilege, but, y'know. he would've eaten him if he didn't think he was at least within the same part of the pyramid of his hierarchy.

what i'm trying to say is that hannibal believed will has achieved the 'right' to be rude.

'eat the rude' is his shortened idiom, i think. similar to how people say 'curiosity killed the katz' but it really is 'curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back.'

or honestly, it could really just be will's pretty privilege that let him go uneaten (literally).
