The smug grin on his lips grew as it clicked. Â The surprise in her face, the way she looked toward other patrons in the tavern, it was all something he relished. Â Even the touch of her hand against his arm was pleasant. Â There was nothing like a womanâs touch, especially not for men who lived hard lives. Â They were soft and pleasant, which was always the downfall for men and why most of their earned wages were given to brothels. Â They craved this sort of tenderness they couldnât have elsewhere.
Charles Vane was not above this feeling. Â He was a man, just like the rest.
â Itâs not always about being clever. â
Many who knew Charles wouldnât say he was a clever man. Not that he was dull, but that he wasnât smart in terms of politics. Some captains came from backgrounds in the navy, or of some sort of standing in society. Â Charles was neither of these men, just a boy raised by a drunken, abusive father and a strong mother, both slaughtered before he was turned to an orphan and clapped in irons.
â Itâs about being strong enough to      do whatâs necessary to survive. â
Her smile grew, urging his affections ever on as her words worked to endear herself to him.
â Anâ yeâre obviously moreân strong... â
She cooed compliments over the man, plying her craft with batting eyes and soft touches, applied expertly at the perfect times. Scarlett let her eyes travel down to the manâs muscular arms, making sure he noted her wandering eyes before flashing a perfectly practiced shy smile back up at his face.
â Dere are many stories about you,          Charles Vane... tell me, are dey true? â

A hearty SNORT left the woman, a painted on smirk widening at the pirateâs   words. Scarlett took one step forward, then two, three⌠until she was in the   opportune position to give Captain Sparrow what he had coming to him. She   raised a single hand as if to gesture along with her words.
To her credit, she paused for the slightest of seconds to consider having a   sincere conversation about why that was the STUPIDEST thing he could   possibly deem to say to her â â â
â â but OLD HABITS die hard.
All that came was a lightning-fast SLAP, followed by a torrent of words not   worth repeating to oneâs mother.
â DO YE *expletive* THINK OIâM SO *expletive* PATHETIC TO NEED      TO COME *expletive* CRAWLINâ BACK TO YE AFTER ALL DESE      *expletive* *expletive* *expletive* YEARS, JACK SPARROW??!???!!? â
Gillette forced his smile to remain as she grabbed his arm. This was certainly the most contact heâs ever had with aâŚwoman of the night. Good Lord, I hope no one sees this.
âIâm so glad you agree. Now, my lady, do you have a name that is fitting to your rather strong will?â
She decided that the man wasn't nearly as dense as he seemed -- really, what man was fool enough to pay both sides of a bet? -- and was merely too shy to admit any sort of interest in a person of her profession. She took it upon herself then and there to loosen the poor lad up a bit.
These navy types were always so uptight, concerned propriety and appearances and all. She let one of her hands, the skin suspiciously darker than her powdered face, rest on the arm she'd already caught with the crook of her elbow.
âDey call me Scarlett, luv. An' 'ow about yerself?â

i love angry charactersÂ
i love characters who are open and vocal about their angerâ whether it is directed at a toxic system, person, or at an event or circumstance unique to themÂ
i love angry characters because i am sick of anger being seen as something that is uncouth and something that should be restrained, kept quiet, never acted uponÂ
i love angry characters because i am angry, and anger isnât always rational, but it is real and deserves to be acknowledged âpeople and characters should have the right to be loud and angry and for it to not constantly be shown in a negative lightÂ

âOh, my lady, you do know how to make a man smile, do you not?â
âWhat did he say? I hope he treated you with respect. Heâs known for being rather uncouth.â He paused, smile faltering a bit. ââŚHe didnât hurt you, did he?â There was a risk of that, though perhaps Basil had not truly considered just how big a risk it truly was to a woman like her. No amount of treasure he could pay to her would bring her back to life, if the worst were to happen. He brought hand up to the shoulder of her dress and smoothed out a wrinkle. âI hope you werenât in any danger.â
A girlish blush that hadnât lived on Scarlettâs face in many a year sprang to life in her already rouged cheeks. âOiâd âope so, Sir.â This gent was uncommonly kind and sympathetic, qualities that were all but unknown in Scarlettâs experience. She shook her head, enjoying the feel of curled hair brushing her bare skin exposed above the low cut of her dress. âTâwerenât nofinâ Oi couldntâa âandled, luv.â
Sheâd earned a few bumps and bruises here and there, and she was certainly sore, but with the opportunity of making money off of her company AND this Mr. Basil, injuries were well worth their weight in gold. ââE didnât say too much at first, but âe opened up soon ânough. Said summâat about leavinâ the port dis morninâ. Said âe had plans to sail further south.â
