To my granddaughter one day,

I hope that you are quiet. No. I will understand you if you are quiet. As though you had been reeled in by some ancient hand, tying you the underbelly of our nature. The recessive gene. I am not always quiet. But I understand myself better when I hold myself a bit tighter to my own chest.

And I hope that you are kind. Not in the way that is meek, but in the way that is goodness and light and honesty.

But I hope that you are mean too. Not in your bones and not a cold spot on your heart, but mean in your muscles and your intuition. That you learn how to be selfish. How to stop giving of yourself, how to never start in the first place.

But you are your business and I’ll mind mine.
