Toph Beifong and her exasperation of being shown things cos her friends keep forgetting that she’s blind. xD

Toph was born blind and was never able to see the value in physical appearance. She only wore dresses and makeup because her parents wanted her to look nice, and so she always associated fashion and makeup with control and dissociated expectations. Furthermore, because no one knew she existed thanks to her parents’ secrecy, she never had any friends to impress or talk to about appearance.

Then one day, Katara suggested that they go out for a makeover–and because Toph was more apathetic than offended, she gave it a shot. To her surprise, she actually enjoyed herself and realized that maybe this whole “getting dressed up” thing wasn’t so bad when it was done right. 

Then, almost immediately, three rich snobs made fun of her for it. Toph made her first venture into the world of being a Normal Girl, and she was immediately attacked and ridiculed. She threw the bullies down a hole and tried to brush the comments aside, but she couldn’t shake the words out of her head. After all, the only things she could know about herself were what others told her–”I look good” wasn’t something she could honestly say about herself.

So Katara said it for her.

She told Toph “You look beautiful”…and because Toph can tell when someone is lying, she knew Katara wasn’t just saying it to make her feel better. Toph looked beautiful, and that was the truth.
