hi thank u to everyone who has been reblogging my essays and posts! they’re older so i didn’t expect them to get traction but lately i’ve noticed adoption in media has become a topic of conversation. it’s is one of my special interests, so i’m so happy to see it and will be posting more.
i remember one time my ap was upset with me because i was finally unpacking some issues i had with the entire process of my adoption. in her defensiveness, she said, “well if it wasn’t us, then it would’ve been somebody else” and that’s exactly my problem! i shouldn’t have been given to anyone with the money. why is that not scary to people?
Took a while (months of research!), but as of today I finished gathering the last of the notations and research I need for "the Portrayal of Adoption in media."
One of the main points I think a lot about is how often what are adoption stories are instead funneled into the lens of "found family."
That's not to say that family of choice as a narrative device is inherently harmful, but instead to say it's limiting in terms of discussion.
One of the pieces of media the video will cover is the 2017 Ducktales reboot and the discourse around it, particularly its finale. Looking forward to showing this off.
A lot of the discourse in the series finale focuses on whether or not the finale is a failed attempt at a found family story or not. It isn't one! It's an adoption story and makes far more sense when looked at through that lens instead. It also gives better context when looking at the artbook for the series that gives individual episode details and production process thinking.
I also want to be clear: for many people, family of choice stories are empowering especially if you're someone who has been in some form of abusive relationships with friends or family and will never take away from that.
My point here is not to rob people of that space but instead to educate people more from an adoption standpoint where the term can be limiting and to give more recognition to the experiences of adoptees.
Through the Ducktales Reboot, the series finale makes far more sense when looked at not as an attempt at a "found family" story but instead an adoptee story told from several perspectives both in a positive sense and in a critical one too.
“the right to adopt” how about the right for me to have access to all of my records, history, family of origin, and to not have to worry about if my paperwork was falsified? how about rights for adoptees?
absolutely ridiculous how people will bring up very valid points about how the surrogacy industry is harmful and then end that by saying “this is why you should adopt instead” as if the adoption industry isn’t also extremely harmful and exploitive

A person named Reem sent me a DM asking if I could pin her story and put more of a spotlight on her fundraiser. So I’d like to go ahead and do just that, I’d like to tell you all a bit about her and her family. I hope that you could spare a moment to read about the Shehab family please.
The Shehab family is a group of 8: Reem, her husband Fahed, their young children Sahar, Dana, Mona, Malak, Yehya, and the children’s grandmother Mona. Sadly, all of them are currently trapped in Gaza amidst the dangers the Israeli occupation has brought and are attempting to evacuate to a safe place.
They’ve faced many hardships from being displaced once again from their home in Gaza after it was bombed after already being displaced many other times before to having to deal with inhumane conditions and the constant threat of death and destruction looming over their heads.
Please take a moment to watch a video that Reem shared with me in which her daughter, Sahar, talks about and shows what they’ve been having to go through in Gaza:
😥Please watch the video until the end Look what happens to us We don't know what comfort is We are tired of this situation. Every day we are
What I’ve mentioned here from Reem's story barely scratches the surface of the struggles that the Shehab family is currently dealing with. I encourage you all to read Reem and her family’s full story on their GoFundMe page with love and care in your hearts for them.
I’ve heard about a lot of Palestinian users getting their accounts shadowbanned or flat out deleted, and unfortunately, Reem has been a victim of this and has had to use her daughter’s account to reach out to others. I encourage you all to follow @monashehab for updates on her and her family’s situation, and so that we can better support them.
This campaign is legit and has been verified by @el-shab-hussein (proof) and shared around by many others so please don’t hesitate to donate!
As of July 2, 2024 (8:19 AM EST), the Shehab family’s campaign is currently at €17,548 of €50,000.
