MR. PRINCE: Technically, post-merger, we're Dust Interactive too.

JENNY: Yes sir. Sorry, sir.

MR. PRINCE: No problem. Keep forgetting to change the sign on the door.

Panel Two: Mr. Prince leans back in his chair.

MR. PRINCE: I'll send it up the chain, but with the merger, it might get lost in the shuffle. Keep on it, okay?

JENNY: I will. Uh, how is the merger going?

Panel Three: Mr. Prince looks dejected.

MR. PRINCE: I hope that question comes with a whiskey sour.

JENNY: Aw, no...

Mr. PRINCE: I'm 100% sure they only keep me around as a favor to the Wizard.

Panel Four: Jenny and Mr. Prince talk. Framed between them is the cover to the PC game "Gemini Paradox" for the Starship Scorpio universe.

JENNY: I'm so sorry, sir. Gemini Paradox was my first computer game. It's why I got into the industry.

MR. PRINCE: Thanks, Jenny. Coding it was my dream job.

Panel Five: Jenny gets up to leave. Mr. Prince is putting on a brave face as she does.

JENNY: I'll keep on this. Thank you, sir. Sorry they passed you over for the promotion.

MR. PRINCE: I'll survive, Jenny.

Panel Six: Mr. Prince is alone in the dark in his office, melancholy.

MR. PRINCE: It'd have been nice, is all.

Panel One: An establishing panel. It's a waiting room at a video game company, and centered in this waiting room is JENNY KOH, Korean-American video game programmer whom we glimpsed back at the start of this chapter. She's fiddling with her phone and drinking a Zen Cola™.

ASSISTANT: Jenny Koh?

JENNY: That's me.

ASSISTANT: Mr. Prince will see you now.

Panel Two: Inside of the office of Mister Prince, a Black man trying to handle middle age with some grace. Jenny is opposite his desk; he has various posters for various video games on the wall, including Gemini Paradox.

MR. PRINCE: Jenny, right? What's so important it couldn't be an Email?

JENNY: It's about the real-time simulation for Brand E.

Panel Three: Mr. Prince looks at Jenny quizzically.

MR. PRINCE: "Brandy?"

JENNY: Sorry. "Brand Echo." You know, Starship Scorpio?

JENNY (SMALLER): Hate these new names they make us use...

Panel Four: Jenny is gesturing at a tablet full of complicated data and error messages.

JENNY: Last night, a sim outlet went outside usual parameters.

JENNY (Con't): I thought it might be signal corruption upstream, but the trace came up clean... as far as I had permission to track it.

Panel Five: Tight on Mr. Prince's face as he rubs his eyes, suddenly tired.

JENNY: I think it came from DEEPCORE. Can we contact Dust Interactive?

PANEL ONE: Alice looks lost in thought as she continues to clear with the rabbi.

ALICE: Temple... just...

ALICE: It reminds me of Dad.

KURTZBERG: Ah. Say no more.

PANEL TWO: Alice and Kurtzberg redouble their cleaning efforts. Alice is irritated.

ALICE: I don't remember there being as much of this shit...

KURTZBERG: It's picked up since the election.

ALICE: Ah. Say no more.

PANEL THREE: The two of them converse as they continue to clean.

ALICE: Rabbi, this is out of nowhere, but what's your opinion on the afterlife?

KURTZBERG: Olam ha-ba? I believe in it, but I don't like to focus on it. Life in the here and now is more important. I believe it's less a place, than a time; that after the messiah's return, all we lost will return to us. No difference between the afterlife and life itself.

PANEL FOUR: Kurtzberg turns to Alice, inquisitive.

KURTZBERG: But what I believe, and what you believe, don't have to be the same belief, obviously. Why do you ask?

ALICE: Rabbi...

PANEL FIVE: Close up on Alice, as she is pensive.

ALICE: Rabbi, I think I saw a ghost. And I think it was Brandy.

BRANDY: Do you want there to be?

PANEL FOUR: They are still in bed. Alice feels ill at ease; Brandy is confident.

ALICE: I dunno. I haven't had much experience dating...

BRANDY: [REDACTED,] you could not possibly be worse than the last man I dated.

PANEL FIVE: Alice is still unconfident as Brandy takes a drink.

ALICE: Just saying, I don't want to screw this up.

BRANDY: If you do, I'll let you know. Promise.

PANEL SIX: The two of them lay on the bed, happy in the moment.

ALICE: Then yes, I would very much like to keep seeing you, Brandy.

BRANDY: Same here, [REDACTED.]

PANEL SEVEN: Alice sneaks in a quip, and is shushed by Brandy.

Panel 1: Alice gingerly creeps back inside her apartment.

Panel 2: Alice examines the scene; the sword sticking out of the painting she was working on.

Panel 3: With a grunt, Alice tears the sword out of the painting.

Panel 4: Alice stares at the sword, lost in thought.

Panel 5: Alice is looking at her reflecting in the paint-coated blade. And she remembers something she said, long ago.

ALICE (BEFORE): “Okay, let’s practice with masks off now. Safety visors only.”

Panel 6: The past. A more masculine-presenting Alice is looking at a blade in much the same way.

SOMEONE (OFF-PANEL): Isn’t that dangerous?

ALICE (BEFORE): Only for a beginner.

This is a page with a single panel, as a towering Princess Nebula, in holographic form, stands over Alice. Her sword has changed – now, instead of a green katana, it’s a pink glowing fencing sword – much like the one that was stuck in the painting. She is looking in Alice’s direction.

She is surrounded by glitched out versions of herself, chanting the same thing, over and over. And she, herself, says something new.

PRINCESS NEBULA: So an old weapon, then.

PRINCESS NEBULA: For old time’s sake.

Panel Four: Alice bursts out onto her balcony, in disbelief.

Words: But we can’t forget their lessons either.
