31: garden? shadowgast maybe? 🥺💕
Prompts are Here
--
When the snows of Rexxentrum had finally receded to the shadows and mountains and forests, the gardens in Zadash had already started to bloom. The first, waxy buds of the trees that lined the historic streets of the Empire's capital-- thin and cultivated branches stretched into pleasant skeletal arches through the winter while the wild and ancient trees that rose like the monsters from Caleb's fairy tales cast their long shadows against the tall city walls-- had started to form. Little beads of promised green that drew in the songbirds searching for seeds as they picked at the shells of the forming leaves and announced the chilly northern spring.
Essek had watched the snows recede with all the careful calculations as he once watched the courtly dramatic in Xhorhas. Every week was the same as he visited. He tried to hide his curiosity, but Caleb knew. He knew that Caleb knew where his interests lay now that the snows had settled into a grumpy pile of muddy grey sludge in the shadow of the garden fence.
"I was considering what to do with it all."
Caleb spent his mornings at the modest kitchen table when Essek was there. Likely when he was not there as well. Their books were set out with their breakfast-- the soft and invigorating scent of the teas Essek had brought with him from the Blooming Grove chasing the familiar smells of crisp bacon and buttery eggs. Food far richer than Essek recalled having so frequently before as they had bent together over their newest innovations and ideas.
Caleb had spoken without looking up from the spell he was copying from Essek's book.
Essek turned back to the garden with a smile as some stray cat confidently meandered around the mud and patches of newly exposed grasses. "You could grow vegetables."
"I was thinking the same. But I only had a talent for beans. Maybe onions."
"Have you asked Yasha?"
"Nein, not yet. Beau has asked me to visit them in Zadash to see their flowers."
"They want to know if you can use any of them. They asked me the same when I last passed through," Essek watched the catch pick its way around old flower beds and ruined ceramic pots that had shattered in the cold depths of the Rexxentrum winter.
"Plant something," Caleb said. It could have been an order more than an invitation if Essek didn't know better. "Anything you want."
It was nothing to cross from window to table once the invitation sank in. Essek stooped to kiss the man's cheek and let his hand slip across broader shoulders than his own. "I do not have the skill. You know that."
"Is that an admission of defeat already?"
"Prodding at my ego will not convince me otherwise."
"You can teach me." Caleb turned back to his work in copying out the spell; "Or we can learn the trick together."
Essek considered the prospect for a moment as he reclaimed his chair and watched Caleb's careful trace of each line and pattern of a spell he had only just developed. He could picture it. The man with his hands buried in the soil, coaxing new life back to it. "Together, perhaps."
I’m every one in this
MAN 1 (in a high pitched, whiny voice) Look what you’ve done to my peonies!
WOMAN (angrily) They’re marigolds!
MAN 2 God! I think she’s right! They are marigolds!
MAN 1 I may not know my flowers, but I know a (yells in her direction) bitch when I see one!
It’s back!
I looked this up because I had to know what it’s from. It’s a film called The Gay Deceivers (1969), and it’s about two straight men who, seeking to avoid the draft, claim to be gay, but then have to keep up the pretense when the army places them under surveillance.
The man in the red cardigan in the clip was played by Michael Greer, who was openly gay himself - unusual for the time. He actually worked closely with the director and rewrote much of the film’s dialogue to reduce the homophobia and make it more realistic. As a result it’s quite progressive for its time, having a gay character, played by a gay man, living in a happy same-sex relationship, which is more than a lot of media offers us today.
Plus the clip is delightful.
I just looked it up on wikipedia and fucking
The twist is that even after the pair is caught, they are not inducted into the military. The Army investigators assigned to watch them are themselves gay and are trying to keep straight people out of the Army.

Crochet Wreath, 2013
Super simple crochet wreath, made with Brown Sheep Co. BurlySpun in variegated green and a foam wreath form. I've made a few of these as gifts; they're very easy to make!
Crocheted ornaments, 2011
One of my favorite last-minute gifts is the crocheted ornament. It uses a tiny amount of yarn, and it's perfect for the samples of handspun I always have lying around. No two are quite alike, and my family and friends all seem to really like them.
Endpaper Mitts, 2013
I made these for myself after my first version ended up too small for my hands. Less than a month after I finished them, I stumbled on the sidewalk and tore a hole in the palm of one of them. They need to be mended but I didn't have the heart to work on them so soon after making two pairs. I think I'm about ready now. :)
Black beret, 2011
Just a black beret I felt like making out of some leftover cashmerino. The band is self-facing so it's thick and warm.
Organic Merino, 2008
Today is my 13th wedding anniversary to my sweet and cute husband!
Granny Triangle, 2013
I used two different Zauberball colorways for this scarf. I love it. I wear it pretty much like this all winter. It looks amazing with a denim jacket.
Purple wool, 2009
Shetland, 2010
Last yarn I spun on my wheel Ulla before I sold her. This is a huge skein and it will probably become a shawl, because I have a total thing for shawls.
Toorie hat, 2013
Made from the same yarn as the Sagebrush Shrug and my green Nashidesei scarf. I really dig the mossy green with the pink flower. This hat is super fun to knit--it's mostly done flat--and I get lots of compliments on it when I wear it.
Black and Blue experiment, 2012
An experimental skein consisting of natural charcoal bfl/wensleydale and blue mohair, blended on the drum carder and spun from a batt. This was one of my first blends. The yarn looks a bit crunchy but it's actually quite soft.
Alpaca laceweight, 2011
Brioche ensemble, 2013
I had two skeins of Noro Nadeshiko that I liked, but I couldn't figure out what to do with them. After making a bunch of brioche headwarmers for gifts, it seemed perfectly natural to make a set for myself! The flower is crocheted. The scarf is really long, so it's perfect for when the wind gets really bitter here in Connecticut in the winter.
