*opens jacket* wanna buy a gender?
cis people getting all their info on trans people from trans men hurts trans women tbqh
i hear so many people say âmy trans male friend told me that [thing that practically does not apply to trans women] and therefore we need [thing that has horrible consequences for trans women]â
This is something which I see on Tumblr a lot. Itâs really important to remember that there are issues that trans women face that have zero to do with trans men, so it needs to be only trans women weighing in on those things. I frequently see trans men for example weighing in on the problems with modern mainstream drag (RPDR et al.) and declaring them ânot really problems because it doesnât bother me personallyâ. That sort of thing needs to stop yesterday.Â
As a person who is uneducated on the issue⌠What is the problem with mainstream drag?
WhewâŚuh. Alright, short version.Â
So back in the day there was ball culture. Ball culture was the precursor to modern drag. Without ball culture, there is no drag. Thatâs the first thing you need to know.
So back in those days, âtransâ wasnât a word we really had yet in American english. âTransgenderâ hadnât really been coined yet, even âtranssexualâ with all its problematic connotations barely existed outside of extremely clinical environments. But if you go back and read things actually written and said by the people who were in that early scene, they were primarily what weâd call âtransâ today. And primarily people of color. For most of US history after colonialism happened, being trans and/or GNC has been dangerous, and for people of color extremely dangerous. Ball culture was a place for people of color with non-birth-assigned or variant gender expression to be themselves in a way that was both celebrated, and safe.
Things have changed, though, and not for the better. Over time, its become less celebration, and more spectacle. Less safe space, and more stage performance. There was always a stage, a show about it, but the ball culture was again about CELEBRATING the gender variant and non-conforming. Modern drag has become a parody, a point-and-gawk, the audience is primarily cis and white, and often even straight.Â
Rather than people who are often not allowed to be themselves to be more themselves, modern drag has become about people becoming someone theyâre not, stage personnas that are taken up for a show and then set aside after, by people who will then turn and mock and show bigotry towards the very people who were once a part of and represented by it. This has become deeply ingrained in modern drag, to the point that if a drag performer comes out as trans, scenes frequently turn on them. Theyâre told that theyâre âtaking it too farâ, rather than revealing more of who they are. Theyâre often looked down on and even outright shunned from drag scenes if they dare come out as trans.
RuPaul and his TV show have only aided this selling out of the culture that was to the masses at the cost of who drag once existed to serve. Games that invite contestants to guess if someone is âfemale or (anti-trans slur)â are a prime example of this. Itâs a little less funny when you realize bigots play that game all the time, only when they spot a trans woman they beat or even kill us. And RuPaul isnât dumb. Heâs been around long enough to know exactly what heâs doing, but heâs too busy making his TV show money to care. When people in the trans community have tried to reach out to him, heâs talked down to us, told us that weâre too young to know better. Iâve been around long enough and studied my history enough to know that HE SHOULD KNOW BETTER. He uses anti-trans slurs in a show with a primarily cis and surprisingly straight-heavy demographic. He uses his fame to continue to defame trans women, and rather than listen, he demeans further. His show has recently even banned trans women completely. Like reflect on how far that is, how much of a theft of culture that represents.Â
The progenitor of drag was about celebrating trans and gnc people. Modern, mainstream drag is a sell-out making money on the backs of my sisters. Thatâs the problem.Â

Reviews of Skyrimâs Inns & Taverns
The Bannered Mare - Whiterun
Good, central location. Letâs orphans loiter and there was some tough broad I got into a fist fight with for respect. I canât sit on the bench near the hearth closest to the bar. Â Hulda gives me good gossip and pays for wood though sheâs very judgmental about mages. Sven thinks I have a crush on him. Inn unknowingly(?) harbored a fugitive Redguard at one point but she took my drink orders so that was nice. Room is decently sized, bed is comfy, and has itâs own balcony overlooking common area. No complimentary breakfast. 8/10.
The Bee and Barb - Riften
The staff is rude, even after I brought Talon-Jei all his damned flawless amethysts. Old man with dead Stormcloak daughter drinks too much. Has unique alcohol for sale but bed is small, room is cramped and I canât seem to walk past Sapphire without garnering her repeated, rude tones. Mage mercenary for hire is why I keep coming back. 4/10.
Braidwood Inn - Kynesgrove
I donât happen through here much, not when Windhelm is a hop and skip away with more people to talk to. Thereâs nothing to see you havenât seen before in other country inns. 3/10.
Candlehearth Hall - Windhelm
I find the upper floor relaxing here. Nils keeps telling me he is the cook. I KNOW NILS, OKAY? There is also a man with a dead daughter here but he doesnât drink as much as the Riften ex-dad. Got into a fist fight with a racist, but what else can you expect in this town? The mercenary is pretty legit if you can afford him. Room is nice though a bit drafty, but breakfast is complimentary. 8/10. Â
Dead Manâs Drink - Falkreath
Funnily enough, no dead daughters considering its name - or maybe because itâs âdead manâ instead of âdead womanâ. Anyway, I canât think of anything important of note here. Standard bed. Good scenery. 5/10. Â
Drunken Huntsman - Whiterun
Owner is cheeky and Jenassa, the resident mercenary is oddly seductive toward me. Can buy arrows and alcohol. 8/10, would drink again.
Four Shields - Dragonâs Bridge
Lovely view but locals are a bit creepy. Kid has a goat for a friend. Cool landmark nearby. Not a place for you if you despise the legion because itâs crawling with imperial soldiers. 6/10.
The Frozen Hearth - Winterhold
Local family-run inn. Cold as fuck. Some freelance wizard is renting out the nice room already and so your stuck in a cold, cramped room. No door on the room. No complimentary breakfast. No mercenary. 2/10.
Frostfruit Inn - Rorikstead
Lovely location, lovely locals (except Lemkil), charming mercenary hanging out in the common room after you convince his dad to let him fight. Probably some daedra worshiping going on but canât prove anything soâŚ7/10.
Mooreside Inn - Morthal
Not much to brag about but a modest establishment. Location is drab. Innkeeper has a wizard brother and thereâs a orcish bard. You donât see that everyday. Thereâs vampire activity at night outside. If you have enough daylight, Iâd suggest running a bit farther and staying in Solitude, thereâs more to entertain there. 5/10.
Nightgate Inn - The Pale
In the middle of frost-fuck nowhere. It has a lake and a secretive orc renting out the basement. Kind of creepy. Would suggest passing by and continuing to next settlement. 1/10.
Old Hroldan - The Reach
Nice place to dodge away from Forsworn, though itâs haunted. Ghost woke me up and sent me on a quest. Child labor in use. 4/10. Â
Ragged Flaggon - Riften Ratways
The barkeep is cool enough but stick around long enough and a weird awkward love square starts to emerge between Vex, Delvin, Tonila, and Venkel. I didnât sign up for this drama. Smells gross because itâs basically a sewer. Hard to get to if you donât know the backdoor trick and you kind of have to be in their guild before the crowd is nice to you, and even then they wonât be (looking at you, Vex and Sapphire.) 3/10.
Silver-Blood Inn - Markarth
Named after a local family of dick bags and kept by a family that only argues with each other. Only worth staying in for the unique Dwemer architecture. Dwemer beds are super uncomfortable, bring your own pillow. Mercenary is a decent fellow. 3/10.
The Sleeping Giant Inn - Riverwood
Nice location. However once I came back from a really long night of tomb raiding and couldnât rent a room because DELPHINE wasnât there. Her non-husband wouldnât rent me a room, maybe because he doesnât know how to count gold, but I was pissed and tired AF. Bad service! 3/10.
Vilmyr Inn - Ivarstead
Forgettable name, but a charming enough spot in Skyrim. A good layover before making a run up the Throat of the world. Small bar, but more seating. Iâd rather have a larger bar. 3/10.
Windpeak Inn - Dawnstar
Shelters orphans so it get s a charity point. Cold room. Had weird dreams..think itâs because of that tower up the mountainâŚ4/10.
Winking Skeever - Solitude
Cheery place full of life! Never felt so at home away from home. Owner is kind and helpful, room is downright luxurious. Plus the local bard has a beautiful singing voice. Many things to do nearby. The best Inn of Skyrim in my humble opinion. 10/10.
I fucking love these. Really made me re-evaluate and appreciate some of these taverns.
Why in my free time I do these things.
