- Inter-disability couples

- Multiple people with the same disability presenting in different ways

- Disabled people who do not have a specific diagnosis

- People with multiple disabilities

- People whose mobility support needs change from day to day or depending on activity

- People who don’t hate being disabled

- People with progressive conditions shown adapting rather than played for tragedy

- Disabled people who are not “good” or “innocent” (but not villains either!)

- Disabled people with multiple marginalized identities, rather than always being white middle-class cishet people who happen to be disabled

- Groups of friends with more than one disabled person

Disabled

Marrying my husband who has a disability has changed my life in more ways than I could have imagined. It is and I feel may always be a learning process in how to love and care for not only my husband but for his disability as well. I am also finding out how to love and care for myself as his wife and as his caretaker at times. Being newly married I am learning what a disability means for our relationship. It is hard not to allow it to define us. Disability can be really negative if I let it. It can mean that we lose out on the simplest things like going for a long walk, or going for a bike ride or even the ability to go on a spontaneous trip. Disability often feels limited and secluded as not many friends understand or may even be uncomfortable around it. I am understanding though that I need to first be comfortable in disability and learn to love all of the good things that can come with it. If I allow a disability to be a positive thing and be open minded it really doesn’t have to feel so secluded and limited. Disability in my marriage has definitely caused frustration, pain and disappointment but it has also brought unconditonal love, creativity and passion. One thing disability has taught me is that love runs deep and it can be fierce. That this is the story God has written for my husband and I to go through together and this is something we were indeed made for.

Today I feel lonely.

Anxiety oftentimes makes one feel lonely whether or not there are people around. I’ve been feeling a sense of loneliness and as if I’m not adequate enough for people to want to be around me. I look at my friends and those who used to be my friends on social media and I see the life they live and how fun it looks. I sit there and think, I wish I was invited or that I had friends that wanted to do those things with me. Sometimes I blame myself for this. For my introverted tendencies caused by anxiety. I blame myself for who I’ve become and how no one would want to be around someone like me. My job takes a huge toll on my energy leaving me to want to sit at home most days I have off. I fear one day that I’ll look back and realize I have no more friends. I fear that anxiety will imprison me for good and I will never be free. Sometimes I wish my friends understood me more so I didn’t seem so distant.

Broken.

In the season of engagement usually people are the happiest they have ever been. It's a happy season of life, it's exciting. But for my fiancé and I that's not so much the case. The both of us are facing our own struggles as well as the typical struggles a lot of young couples face during this transition. For Sam, he has a lot of physical and emotional set backs that are painful and crippling. From those set backs he is often left with fear of being the best man he can be for his future spouse. And for me I am dealing with more of an emotional battle of being happy. I have no control of my jealousy and bitterness. I am in this exciting time of life, and yes I am So very excited to be marrying the man I love with all my heart, but I can't help but to be frustrated. And to be quite honest I'm frustrated I think with myself the most because of my jealous tendencies. I need to learn that God has given me, really he's given US, such a wonderful relationship that we need to be so very thankful for. We are both broken people and tend to find unhappiness before we actually see the good around us and at that point we are too far into the negative thoughts we are robbed from our happiness. I pray that we would be able to remind ourselves of Gods goodness and faithfulness. We need to stand strong and firm against Satan and not let him destroy us individually so we can stand strong in our marriage. I am so thankful for a God that forgives our brokenness and gives us day in and day out another chance to trust in him.
