How do we move our bodies from one place to another? We put one foot in front of the other.
When I changed houses, I thought I’d change myself. Now, I know better: no one enters a room without carrying in another.
The sweetness of the world is in proximity: motes of dust rising in the rear view mirror—proof that you are in one place and no other.
As I write, the roses are unfurling their tremendous blooms. A summer storm hangs heavy in the air. This is the square of land that bore me, but now I know another.
There are orchards I think of as belonging to the past. In a couple months their antique trees will bear new apples, to be collected by some others.
I will never be in two places at once, and you either— not in space nor time. But memory helps. Everything lost comes back to us, in one way or another.
If there is sweetness in the world (and there is, I’ve seen it), then it’s in closeness to each other: a kind of grace that comes of looking at oneself and seeing, too, another.
