when sam was leaving in scarecrow, dean said he was proud of sam for having the wherewithal to do it and was going to "let" him go on his own (not that sam needed to be let go)

dean then offers to "drop sam off somewhere", indicating a continued acceptance that he understands sam wants a separate life; sam's the one who chooses to stay

the context of the above screencap is dean wishing that they could be a family again, and listening to sam patiently explain that it's "never gonna be like it was," and dean listens and doesn't argue

it's sam who opts to let the demon go at the end of s1 in the interest of saving john and dean's lives; it's sam who chooses to stay, every time

it's the companion show to 'dean is unhinged possessive bigbro-natural', which is beyond heinous into some kind of avant-garde level of lack of comprehension. like it's art. not good art, but

Does anyone else ever get really caught up thinking about how in the very first episode, there's a scene where Sam dives off of a bridge to duck out of the way of an incoming possessed Impala charging at him and Dean? And Sam's limber and youthfully agile, and deftly maneuvers onto a ledge, and it's clear he'd planned on doing that. That he'd mentally calculated that, before taking the spiraling leap. But Dean just saw Sam jump, and then jumped right after him. And a woman literally committed suicide springing herself from that bridge, so presumedly, it was one nasty tumble of a fall that had the potential to be fatal had Dean not been so robust (or likely practiced in falling). But Dean just hauls his mud-soaked body to shore and hollers up to Sam that he's okay. And walks it off like the champ he is with a pain tolerance only seconded by that legendary heavyweight liver. Like. It was the very first episode. The writers did that. In the pilot.

They literally said, "If Sam jumped off a bridge, Dean would jump right on after him without a second thought." And they really set the tone for the rest of the show with that one scene, didn't they?

doomed by the narrative? no, no, tortured by the narrative. the narrative hates Sam Winchester, the narrative wants Sam Winchester dead but Dean Winchester, the audience and the antithesis to the narrative, does not want him to be anything but alive. in fact, the story is only a story if Sam is in it.
