If we passed each other in the street, would we even recognize each other anymore?

butch is about rejecting standards of femininity forced on us. to an extent, it’s about dressing in ways that are considered masculine, but it’s also more than that. it’s hard to put into words. it is courage, strength (not necessarily physical), its own kind of beauty or handsomeness, wanting to protect, devoting your life to other women.

femme is about subverting femininity. you don’t dress and act the way you do for men, you do it for yourself and for other women. i can’t speak as much about femmes because i am not one, but what really comes across is this almost fierce but paradoxically gentle love, this appreciation for other women, this bravery. it’s amazing.

and a big part of our identities is love for each other. butch/femme couples are not the only valid forms of relationships; butches can date other butches and femmes can date other femmes. still, there’s a deep connection and history between butch and femme lesbians. we appreciate and cherish each other, relish and celebrate our differences and similarities.
