“So,” Penelope started as she linked her arm through Eloise’s as they walked across the lawn. “How was your time at Aubrey Hall been this year before you were invaded by guests? Did you get a chance to beat your brothers at Pall Mall?” She asked, a smile clear on her face. She had missed her friend dearly, and was hoping that this topic would not make her stomach tie up in knots as it had often done this season.

       a  frustrated  sigh  breaks  out  of  her  lips,  head  shaking  right  away  at  penelope’s  words.  ❝  it  was  just  as  dull  as  always,  i  am  afraid.  even  the  game.  daphne  won  again,  unfortunately.  though  there  shall  be  an  honorable  mention  to  miss  sharma’s  role  in  the  game.  she  managed  to  get  the  mallet  of  death  and  she  played  my  brother  beautifully!  ❞  the  brunette  replied,  a  half  smile  blooming  in  glossy  lips.  ❝  and  now  mama  is  determined  to  make  me  act  like  a  proper  host  which  is  ridiculous  seeing  as  this  whole  thing  was  her  idea  and  anthony’s.  but  how  was  mayfair?  did  i  miss  anything  exciting?  ❞

Felicity paused outside her sister’s door after they had returned from the Macclesfield Ball, her mind preoccupied with both the mind boggling announcement that Cressida Twombley was apparently Whistledown, but also.. that her beloved elder sister had held hands with Colin Bridgerton- the man Penelope had not-so-secretly been in love with for years- for almost a full thirty minutes! She smirked for a moment in remembrance, before it shifted into a smile. Her best friend Hyacinth had noticed as well, and it was better for all of them if Felicity got their questions answered. She knocked on the door gently. “Penelope, are you still awake? Can I come in?”

    how  dare  cressida  do  that?  how  dare  she  state  she  was  lady  whistledown  as  though  she  was  smart  and  clever  enough  to  do  that?  penelope  very  well  knew  that  her  lady  whistledown  charade  would  never  end  with  her  revealing  her  identity  but...  cressida?  no,  she  could  not  allow  it.  it  was  not  fair,  she  realized,  blood  boiling  with  anger.  penelope  was  nearly  blind  with  it,  truly,  though  it  would  have  been  far  worse  had  colin  not  held  her  hand  during  the  whole  thing  -  which  was,  indeed,  another  mystery  all  on  its  own.  why  had  he  held  her  hand?  it  was  all  rather  overwhelming  and  the  woman  could  hardly  wait  to  get  some  rest.  she  realized,  however,  that  her  intentions  would  have  to  be  postponed  when  she  heard  a  knock  on  the  door  followed  by  felicity’s  quiet  voice.  ❝  yes,  come  in,  felicity!  ❞  penelope  replied,  soft  smile  gracing  her  features.  ❝  is  everything  alright?  ❞

      she  fought  back  the  urge  to  scoff,  attempting  to  show  anthony  some  respect.  after  all,  he  was  the  viscount  and  her  oldest  brother  &  the  man  who  had  been  somewhat  of  a  father  to  her  as  well.  not  in  the  same  way  he  had  been  to  gregory  and  hyacinth  as  francesca  could  still  remember  her  father,  but  anthony  had  been  there  in  a  way  edmund  unfortunately  could  not.  ❝  brother,  i  believe  you  shall  go  to  the  country  right  away  to  spend  time  with  your  wife.  you  need  not  concern  yourself  with  me.  ❞  that  did  not  mean  she  would  not  try  to  escape  his  controlling  energy,  especially  given  he  was  about  to  leave.  ❝  which  begs  the  question:  what  makes  you  think  my  suitor  shall  need  tormenting?  we  are  following  proper  courting  etiquette  and  the  earl  of  kilmartin  is  a  gentleman.  mama  has  met  him  and  she  approves.  i  believe  we  need  not  make  haste  for  you  to  meet  him.  ❞

     she  had  half  a  mind  to  remain  quiet,  bite  down  on  her  tongue  and  keep  her  curiosity  inside.  yet  sophie  could  not  help  it,  the  way  her  eyebrows  raised  at  his  words.  the  blonde  could  not  quite  tell  what  he  meant.  whether  he  was  the  one  who  would  not  provide  answers  or  whether  he  was  accusing  her  of  keeping  secrets  (  and  her  paranoia  was  getting  the  best  of  her  at  last.  )  either  way,  it  reminded  her  of  the  first  night  they  met,  when  benedict  had  spent  all  too  long  pestering  her  with  questions  if  only  to  find  out  something  (  anything  )  about  her.  oh  how  things  had  changed  so  since  then.  the  night  which  had  given  her  sustenance  to  endure  hardships  throughout  the  last  years  probably  long  forgotten  by  him.  

      allowing  light  hues  to  drift  from  her  book,  the  blonde  glanced  at  @phantasiia​  for  a  second.  ❝  how  can  you  be  so  sure  it  shall  prove  fruitless?  ❞  she  inquired,  closing  the  book  and  setting  it  aside  for  a  second.  ❝  you  never  know  what  might  happen  if  you  do  indeed  seek  them.  ❞

      michael  felt  the  need  to  bite  his  tongue,  the  urge  to  laugh  at  her  statement  stronger  than  he  dared  admit.  did  he  know  how  love  could  creep  up  on  a  person?  of  course  he  did,  for  ever  since  he  caught  a  glimpse  of  her  smile?  love  crept  up  on  him.  surely,  he  did  not  understand  the  depths  of  his  feelings  at  first.  he  had  indeed  attempted  to  convince  himself  it  was  not  love  but  rather  desire  or  an  affection.  but  every  time  francesca  bridgerton  blessed  him  with  a  smile  or  a  dry  chuckle  or  a  sarcastic  remark,  he  found  himself  drawn  to  her  and  he  just  knew...  it  was  love.  leave  it  to  michael  stirling  to  fall  in  love  with  his  cousin’s  wife.  however,  as  troubling  as  that  had  been,  nothing  quite  wounded  him  as  much  as  hearing  her  plague  him  with  talks  of  matchmaking  and  wedding.  how  could  she  not  see  it  was  her  he  loved  and  cherished?  how  could  one  even  think  of  marrying  someone  else  when  perfection  took  form  in  her?

Colin’s body tensed for a moment at the reminder before he forced himself to relax. It was not truly her that he was angry at- at least not completely. He was unable to put into words how he was really feeling, other than what he had previously said during their argument in his carriage. “I am not unsure about us. While I am angry, it is more at the thought of you being in danger.” He paused, his eyes sincere as he looked at his fiancee. “Now is not the time nor place to discuss that though.”

The feeling of her hand on his cheek made him wish they were completely alone. His eyes fluttered shut for a moment to control himself, before he opened them again. Green eyes sparkled as he turned his head just enough to kiss her palm. “I do see you, and I will never be able to do otherwise again.”

     after  so  many  years,  it  was  hard  for  penelope  not  to  notice  even  the  subtlest  changes  in  people’s  postures.  especially  colin  bridgerton  himself.  she  could  tell  when  he  grew  tense,  smile  faltering  for  a  second  before  she  allowed  herself  to  nod  quietly.  she  could  not  help  but  wonder  what  was  going  on  in  his  mind,  but  chose  to  change  topics  anyway.  ❝  of  course.  you  shall  forgive  me  for  bringing  it  up.  ❞  today  was  to  be  a  day  of  celebration,  after  all.  even  if  colin  had  failed  to  react  as  penelope  had  hoped  he  would,  they  were  still  to  be  wed  and  that  was  her  biggest  dream  come  true.  

      smile  bloomed  in  glossy  lips  once  he  kissed  her  palm,  a  dreamy  sigh  filling  the  space  between  them.  ❝  then  that  is  all  we  shall  think  about.  the  past  is  in  the  past  and  now  we  are  to  marry.  ❞  she  whispered,  a  giggle  breaking  out  of  her  as  penelope  actually  said  the  words  out  loud.  they  were  going  to  get  married.  she  would  be  a  bridgerton.  it  was...  unbelievable,  but  lovely.

Her brown eyes blinked back tears that were both of relief that her sister forgave her, and the pain she had been living with for months. Not to mention the fact that Anthony had not visited her since the accident. If nothing else, that told her what she needed to know, no matter how much she hated it. “Your happiness has always been more important to me than my own. Ever since you were placed in my arms as a baby.” 

Edwina’s tears made her shake her head. “I know you could not, but.. I thought it was merely.. passion. That if I ignored it long enough and went back home, it would pass in time. It matters not. He does not love me, bon. I can only hope that once I am home again, the hurt will lessen.”

     lips  part  slightly,  a  sigh  breaking  out  of  edwina  as  she  closes  the  distance  between  them.  sitting  by  kate’s  side  on  the  bed,  the  youngest  sharma  cannot  help  but  shake  her  head.  ❝  you  know  i  love  you,  didi.  more  than  there  are  stars  in  the  sky.  but  my  happiness  should  have  never  been  more  important  than  your  own.  you  are  brilliant  and  kind  and  funny  and  courageous.  you  deserve  to  be  happy,  we  both  do.  ❞  she  pauses,  reaching  out  to  grab  the  other’s  hand.  

       ❝  i  believe  it  is  time  you  stop  sacrificing  yourself  for  me.  you  shall  do  whatever  it  is  you  wish  to  do.  even  if  that  means  leaving.  ❞  edwina  says  quietly,  sad  smile  gracing  glossy  lips.  ❝  though...  we  have  both  read  enough  books  to  know  this  kind  of  pain  does  not  fade  away.  it  might  waver,  but-  are  you  sure  you  should  like  to  go?  i  mean...  i  have  seen  the  way  he  looks  at  you,  kate.  i  do  think  he  loves  you.  ❞

     blue  hues  grow  wider  at  the  comment,  lips  parting  slightly  as  her  brain  searches  for  a  good  enough  reply  that  would  not  offend  the  other  any  further.  ❝  a  small  measure  of-  it  was  not  my  intention  to...  miss...  ❞  except  it  seems  as  though  words  are  failing  her.  for  a  second,  all  she  can  do  is  look  to  the  ceiling.  why  is  it  so  hard  for  her  to  express  herself  at  times?  it  is  so  much  easier  to  do  so  in  letters.  but  face  to  face?  oh  what  a  debacle.  at  last,  the  bridgerton  girl  takes  a  deep  breath  and  glances  back  at  @dolcesuono​.  

      ❝  i  hope  you  know  it  was  not  my  intention  to  insult  you,  miss.  i  believe  every  woman  is  intelligence  and  should  be  valued  as  such  regardless  of  their  social  status.  in  fact,  i  should  think  i  envy  you  for  being  free  to  be  yourself  and  do  whatever  it  is  you  want  to  do.  ❞  eloise  starts  off  speaking  slowly,  but  soon  she  is  rambling  at  the  speed  of  light  for  she  is  growing  restless  once  more.  ❝  what  i  mean  to  say  is...  i  am  sorry.  ❞

    here’s  a  reminder  that  ed/wina  did  not  know  of  the  sh/effi/eld’s  stipulations  but  she  very  well  still  knew  that  ma/ry  and  kat/e’s  futures  depended  on  her  marrying  well.  so  when  an/tho/ny  does  not  propose  at  aub/rey  ha/ll,  she  feels  like  a  failure  for  her  family,  especially  ka/te  who  spent  so  long  tutoring  her,  and  that  goes  well  beyond  her  feelings  for  him.  she  does  have  feelings  but  she  does  not  in  fact  realize  that  she  loves  him  until  later  on.  at  that  moment,  she  can  only  think  she  lost  her  chance  and  she  will  never  capture  someone  else’s  attention  because  they  will  think  there  is  something  wrong  with  her  and  she  understands  how  important  it  is  that  she  has  a  flawless  reputation.  so  she  is  terrified.  it  all  goes  back  to  her  love  for  her  family.
