“But it’s in pain.” She explained, almost in tears herself. She hated seeing others in pain, and animals were definitely no different. “Is there anyone we could get to help? I don’t know much about healing.”

Tucking her hands under her arms, Victoria glanced back in a direction she remembered seeing a medical clinic. But with earnest doubt they’d take in an animal patient, she replied, “Someone with magic, perhaps? Otherwise it will die.”

“A bird of that size isn’t worth the time to save.”

“The poor thing has a broken wing.” Briar explained quietly, cradling the sparrow in her hands. She had been trying to collect her thoughts, taking a quiet stroll away from others when she had heard the bird crying out.

“Then you should have left it where it was!” The Queen scolded, imagining what kind of contaminants were already crawling up the girl’s arms. “They are pests, dear. And food for those larger.”

“You sound like my mother.” Not a compliment.

“Your mother must be an intelligent woman,” she mused, casually brushing tiny crumbs of tart off the breast of her blouse. “Does she have your vibrant hair?”

“Hey, weird question, but you haven’t seen a scarecrow walking around, have you?” Granted, if her skin was no longer green, who was to say Fiyero was even still in that state? “Or maybe a small blonde? Incredibly chipper and most likely in a pink, sparkly, frilly dress.”

“No scarecrows,” answered Victoria, who was carelessly chewing on a piece of bubble gum. “As for small blondes, you can probably purchase a dozen for a shiny penny.”

It’s not that she doesn’t like the Queen. In fact, despite the fear that marked their first meeting, Marian has grown to like her. But Marian has conflicting feelings about royals. On the one hand, she’s spent her entire life admiring what she’d heard of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Berengaria of Navarre, her own queens. On the other hand, Prince John had left her with a distrust of royalty. Marian wants to believe that Victoria will prove to be more like the queens she so desperately wants to emulate, and less like the prince that’s effectively ruined her life. 

And all those varying feelings aside, she can hardly say no to the woman’s invitation. 

“Unbirthdays? No.” Her reply comes with a shake of her head. “What is an unbirthday, Your Majesty?” Marian asks, a sip of her tea (coffee, she thinks, is too bitter).

Instead of finishing her shortbread, Victoria had already taken a fork in her other hand to begin prying at the slice of crepe-cake to her left.

“Exactly as it sounds! A day that is not your day of birth. Today is mine, and I’m delighted to have you celebrate with me.”

Apart from herself, the only other thing on the Queen’s mind was how darling Marian would look in the fashion of her kingdom. If the opportunity ever arose, she was keen to take the young woman with her back to Wonderland and keep her as a lady of her court. 

“Are you still alone in this place?”

“I’ve merely twisted my ankle, I’ll be fine.” She longed to transform into a wolf and run away from prying eyes but Aria had stressed the importance of keeping a cover. This wasn’t their world. “You can go.” She waved them away.

“Nobody tells me what to do,” Victoria proudly declared, her face scrunching almost goblin-like at the poor girl. “It wouldn’t have happened if you had been more careful, you know!”

                   to  no  one’s  surprise ,  alice’s response  appeared  to  have  only  infuriated  victoria  further .  the  girl  canted  her  head  up  and  away  as  the  queen  seethed  under  her  breath ,  repeating  the  threat  that  had  so  often  featured  in  alice’s  childhood  nightmares .  it  was  such  a  severe  change ,  hearing  the  queen’s  vitriol  expressed  in  a  malicious  hiss  instead  of  the  familiar  booming  ROAR ,  that ,  despite  the  girl’s  previous  bravado ,  the  words  managed  to  get  in  under  her  skin .  suppressing  a  shiver ,  alice  fought  to  keep  her  expression  calm .  she  was  thankful  that  over  the  years  she  had  grown  at  least  closer  to  the  queen  in  height ,  but  a  dash  of  magical  mushroom  wouldn’t  go  unappreciated  right  about  now .

                  ❛  wonderland  or  no  wonderland  –  YOU’RE  nothing  but  an  awful  hag  with  a  barbaric  temper .  ❜  curious  eyes  that  had  been  drawn  to  the  queen  and  the  threats  spilling  from  her  mouth  flitted  over  to  alice  next ,  as  if  watching  the  volley  of  a  ball  at  a  tennis  match . 

                  ❛  well  clearly  i’ve  been  here  far  too  long ,  since  i’ve  had  the  misfortune  of  running  into  you .  but  if  you  must  know ,  it’s  been  a  few  days  since  i  found  myself  here .  ❜  alice  crossed  her  arms  primly ,  and  prepared  to  march  herself  in  the  other  direction  in  the  next  breath .  an  end  to  this  conversation  couldn’t  arrive  too  soon .

With a flutter of the eye, Victoria arched back, away from the conversation for a moment. When the feeling of eyes peering at them became too unbearable, she shot a look to some bystanders that made them disperse. Most pretended (poorly) to not have been watching.

“I will not forget your behavior, child. You may consider yourself lucky I’ve not the energy to discipline you as I see fit.”

Elbows raised comically at each side, her fingertips dug into the flesh of her own waist. As much as she wanted the girl dead, it did occur to the Queen that she might have learned something useful in her time of stay. She was already convinced she should try to extract the truth from her.

“DON’T be rude. Me, and anyone else? Perhaps the Rabbit? Surely there cannot be just the two of us.”

“I suppose that’s to be expected,” he offered. Something about the other making him wary even though he couldn’t put his finger on just what it was “none of consequence I don’t think,” he replied with an attempt to be dismissive. “you must forgive me, I don’t recognise your face…”

Victoria’s lips pursed, but she supposed she couldn’t blame him for being unaware. He was hardly the first, and it wasn’t as though she could recognize most people around town either.

“I am Victoria, Queen of Hearts. And you haven’t satisfied my question! Withholding isn’t a good look on you, however charming your face may be.”

Victoria was always fond of hosting brunches with members of her court, but recently there weren’t many folks around willing to sit with the Queen for a prolonged period of time. But somehow, someway, she’d convinced the Maid Marian to join her at a pristine little shop for coffee and cakes (and so on). 

Soaking in the sunny warmth from the window, she wiggled happily in her booth as she took the first bite of a shortbread cookie. “So tell me. Do they have unbirthdays in Nottingham?”

“ Tart ? ” He asked, posing nothing but a clueless expression.

His eyes went wide at the question as a wicked grin suddenly appeared on his features. “ Halloween time ! The time to scare people. ”

“Yes, tart. The baked treat with fruit jelly in the centre. They are scrumptious.”

She was pleasantly surprised to hear what the boy was excited about. “There’s a special time dedicated to scaring people?”

“Well,” Tristan spoke, his voice holding a sigh despite the fact that he knew he should have at least tried to be optimistic, or that’s at least what Ella would tell him “I’m not sure what I’d been expecting the spell to be, but it certainly wasn’t this place,” His arms were crossed about his chest as he made his confession. “please tell me it at least gets better,”

“Some get along here better than others,” the Queen offered, focusing hard on a hangnail she couldn’t decide how to get rid of. But something the man said before gave her cause for concern, and she turned her attention to the Prince.

“And just WHAT were you expecting from... what spell?”

Bagheera just looked at her with dead eyes. Seriously ? He was not even going to go there.  “I don’t know either, but I hear these people in this world like to do coming outs, maybe you secretly like cats, one will ever know”

“‘Coming out’... as if that is a truth I am concealing? You’ve got a strange-humored imagination, panther. They are nothing but meddling predators, cats. I know one in particular is a special nuisance to my daily rule.”

“Or... he was. But I still hate him.”
