FUN STAR WARS (TM) FACT: The 'bad' in The Bad Batch stands for how badly whitewashed they are! Follow for more fun Disney (R) STAR WARS (TM) facts!
[tumblr user: ilikemymendarkandfictional
I’m about to start oppressing and invalidating light eyed people because of this. are you happy? are you happy?
[Transcript: I saw one artist that redid Kanan/Caleb and got rid of his green eyes, replacing them with brown. When confronted about it, they [sic] said it was a bad design choice for him to have green eyes because POC shouldn’t have them and it’s whitewashing. That statement alone made me so angry. There are many POC that have blue/green/light colored eyes and saying that they don’t exist is just wrong and invalidating.]
I see posts like this and I get a little exhausted because the downside to being in such a large and old fandom is these discussions keep on having to be talked about again and again.
POC do have light colored eyes in real life, yes. However, as I keep having to restate, you need to consider the creators and their intent on having preferential design choices and how they pick certain features over others.
I think we would be giving these creators too much credit to say that when they design them in this way that they have these POC with light features in mind to represent.
They aren’t doing it for the representation.
These (white) creators are doing it for a specific exotic or otherworldly aesthetic.
Steela Gerrera. Saw Gerrera. Kanan Jarrus.
They are all fictional characters of color designed by white people in which they specifically gave them light colored eyes which – and we need to admit this despite people wanting to play devil’s advocate – are predominantly eurocentric features. And a lot of “light” features have often been lauded as “desirable” beauty features historically, and also currently with society.
And we haven’t even touched on how a lot of those characters are white washed not just in their skin but within their facial features, hair, etc.
Comparatively, I think about how a white man, Arthur Golden, chose to write a book about a geisha with blue eyes and spear headed the intrigue and interest into that world with personal creative flourishes that were later scorned by the geisha he interviewed for research.
The blue grey eyes of Sayuri had been a completely fictional addition and not based on anyone in particular, and within the book it is used to as a form of attraction and intrigue for Sayuri’s life. It makes her special even if she is scorned by her own parents for it to the point where she is essentially sold. Still, it is those features that also bring her to great heights within her life and career because they are seen as an unusual exotic feature to her, and somehow makes her all the more desirable.
Blue grey eyes that are usually normally seen within a white populace. Features that were written into the story by a white man on an asian character, based on no one in particular. In a way, it feels like a reflection on how he wrote his story despite having someone in real life to reference from. He chose to diverge from paths and create something fantastical that wasn’t even there for his own creative liberties.
Regardless of whatever I can surmise of his intentions, it makes me always have to question white creators and their fascination with giving characters of color features such as light colored eyes because it usually never really seems to come from a place of wanting to make good representation.
We’re just paper dolls to mix and match features for an aesthetic.
me: i just want star wars stop being racist
star wars, king of disappointment: may offer you whitewashing in big scale
@crownpiratemax now as this is a sideblog I have to make a new post to reply, I swear I'm not just clowning on you, though this response is responsible for the rib I probably just broke from laughing at it. to offer a serious reply, point by point:
-"A computer glitch" shows a complete failure to understand how modeling, lighting, and animation programs work. and if it were a glitch, wouldn't they have fixed it before releasing the episode? are there no quality checkers over at star wars hq?
-"Lighting of the planet" why is Depa still brown then? why are their robes still brown? do you care to explain why Caleb's skintone is the only thing suffering from this planet's mysterious melanin-zapping powers?
-"A fever, infection related breathing problems" not really sure what to say to this as it's so outlandish. are you Caleb's doctor? was this a plot point in the episode? if not, drop it.
I'm not "throwing the crew under the bus" and frankly they are grown adults who don't need you defending them. they are people who are paid to create and release a product and as consumers we have a right to point out they've fucked up. you do realize this is being released on Disney+ and people are paying for the honour of seeing Kanan whitewashed, right? it's not like this is sidewalk art we're going mad over. please. they make more money than you ever will; you really do NOT need to cape for them.
Or, you know, I'm not freaking out because this is a frankly minor artistic difference between the shows and people are really overreacting. They're obviously not ignorant of this (Filoni made the character) and they're sure as hell not racist.
this is not "rebels anakin is ugly" discourse, this is "kanan is a brown man of color and he looks inexplicably white here" discourse within the context of star wars having a long struggle with how they treat poc representation, within the context of a show that whitewashed ALL of its main characters.
you can make a character and still be ignorant about and blind to how certain decisions about said characters can cause real-world implications and harm to real people. a quick historical look at how white creators have treated poc in film/literature should be enough evidence that creating a character =/= understanding and knowing how to do justice to a character.
i overall have had a positive impression of filoni and the lucasfilm animation department and i enjoy many of the stories they've created over the years—but they're not immune to criticism. and i think it's unacceptable in 2021 to have blatant whitewashing on this scale. they can do better, and i want them to do better.
It is absolutely insidious to model a younger version of a character and raceswap him while you're at it. To associate whiteness with fragility, youth, innocence; to imply it was a rough life that led to Kanan developing melanin. It's one of the million messages which denies children of colour their right to an actual childhood. Pair this with the whitewashing already happening in The Bad Batch that associates stronger clones = paler skin you have a truly toxic combination of racism.
the kananposting continues. please compare these two images.
these are meant to be the same character. the first is caleb dume, right before order 66, in the now-retconned comic backstory for kanan. the second is a pic of caleb dume i grabbed off twitter of his surprise bad batch cameo. i’ll cut the second one some slack - it’s a picture of a screen, since d+ makes it impossible to take screenshots, so naturally it’ll be washed out. but i just went and took a look at the episode, and honestly it’s not much lighter than the pic. a little more color, maybe, but nowhere near the shade we’ve seen before. plus, the lighting of the first picture is at night, illuminated by a campfire. so here’s some of caleb in broad daylight in his comic flashbacks.
you see why this is a problem, right? in a show where there have already been numerous critiques about whitewashing? lest we forget, here’s what kanan looks like in rebels
like. this is a problem, and a consistent one at that. yes, young kanan’s skintone wasn’t quite the same in the comics than it was in rebels, but at least he wasn’t as pale as obi-wan. they’ve also completely changed features like his nose, which i guess could be explained by caleb not having broken his yet, but nonetheless. filoni’s content, especially the bad batch, has a problem with whitewashing and it needs to be addressed by more of the fanbase.

depa billaba must have been busy, what with having two padawans at the time of the purge. anyone know who this white boy is?
Ok, how about this. Compare them to characters that are unambiguously white. I guarantee you that their skin tine swill be darker.
how does it feel to be a clown
OMFG I’VE JUST REALIZED YOU GUYS TBB!CALEB LOOKS LIKE PADAWAN ANAKIN 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
here’s all the edits i did today for ur viewing pleasure and also i’m so fuckign sad they’re so young guys
Also i can die in peace now that cut lawquane isn’t 62 at 11 years old and Suu gets a hot husband
GIF makers are gonna try their absolute hardest to put some melanin back in the bad batch and for that I applaud them
Kanan isn’t white: a Masterpost
Since apparently this post needs to be made despite the fact that he is literally the darkest-skinned human member of the crew of the Ghost.
And had always been conceived as a POC from the earliest concept art.
And is an aspect which is still very apparent in his final character design.
Finally finished the wip I posted a few days ago.
We stan our space dad
now factually even white men can evolve but evolve into replacing a man of colour? now that’s just fake news
A reminder that Kanan Jarrus skintone is not “white” and a screenshot with him next to a person most would consider actually white for easy comparison, as as well as a screenshot of him in bright uncolored lighting if anyone needs a good reference of his actual skintone without lightsabers or weird light sources since some people seem unable to make fanart without lightening his skin considerably. (they also tend to remove his big hooked/broken(?) nose, but I’m sure that’s got nothing to do with anything)
