Vera and Freddie's chemistry is just too hot to waste
When Norma kissed Norman in the Bates Motel Season 2 finale the whole dynamic and nature of their relationship was thrown under even more scrutiny. The kiss was executed perfectly and after the slow build-up of their intense and close interactions, it was a kiss that seemed so beautifully right. For a few seconds it appeared that Norma momentarily forgot she was his mother and gave into her subconscious aching, romantic feelings for him. She quickly slipped right back into the role of loving mother a few seconds afterwards, but for those few seconds it was easy to forget they were mother and son as the intensity of the situation they were in resulted in a fleeting yet very telling moment of passion between the two.
It’s amazing how many people I speak to (in real life and numerous places online) who now actually want to see their relationship go into the realms of them becoming physically intimate. Hell, there are even pages on Facebook now where fans are gathering wanting to see it happen. Now that a kiss between the two has happened viewers are in a place where anything that comes next will be more excitedly anticipated than shocking. The writers have now taken a massive step towards crossing an already very blurred line and viewers love it. Even those who were shocked by the kiss were also so morbidly fascinated by it that there is no way they’re going to switch off. Everyone wants to see what will happen next between them.
We all know now that Norma’s troubled past has made her wholly dependent on Norman and this is why this type of relationship and bond between the pair exists. She relies on him for emotional strength, companionship, protection, comfort and that’s where the lines get blurred. They behave like they are a couple but neither of them have actually figured out or have been brave enough to acknowledge to themselves that an underlying physical, romantic attraction to each other exists. Their jealousy towards each other’s prospective love interests, their longing gazes at each other, their constant close touching of each other is all becoming thicker and more oppressive. Their sexual tension sizzles and bubbles away and the more they repress their feelings the more the sexual tension builds. Their latest traumatic events have just gone towards strengthening that bond and tension even further.
It appears that more and more people are beginning to understand the dynamic between the pair. Those that have seen it all along know this dynamic is that they are seemingly completely in love with each other. It just hasn’t manifested itself in a physical relationship..…yet. Norman clearly has more awareness of his attraction to Norma than she does to him at this point, but when she’s at her most vulnerable she slips and we see it. Over the course of the second season the instances of sexual tension between the two were given a major kick into the overload zone.
To anyone looking in from the outside their relationship would appear twisted and sick, but to them, with their troubled minds, lives and pasts, their relationship and love is beautiful and right. All they can see each other and because of that the development and existence of their sexual tension and desire is so understandable. A crossing of the line would be a forgivable twist in a heart breaking love story of two people who can’t ever be together properly in the eyes of the world, but definitely should be. You have to ask yourself if the writers can actually deny them their moment of total togetherness and passion together now. It would likely majorly contribute to their ultimate downfall but it just seems so necessary and essential to the plot now. They love each other so totally and should be allowed to show each other that. In their world it would be like heaven; their own private sanctuary that no one else would ever understand or need to understand. This is the one occasion that an incestuous moment between a mother and son would have so much genuine meaning and love behind it. They can’t help their minds, it’s just how they are and they need each other in all ways.
Where the writers take their relationship next season is going to be exciting to watch. They have always appeared to have had somewhat of a reticence of moving too fast or doing too much when it comes to the Norma and Norman storyline, but they certainly strongly acknowledge it’s there. Very interestingly Freddie Highmore is the one who pushes this storyline forward and he was responsible for the Season 2 finale kiss happening. It’ll be interesting to see what sway he has over things next season and what effect his interpretation of their relationship so far will have on the writers as the show moves on. Hopefully it will move forward to where a very large number of fans think it’s now going. The kiss in the Season 2 finale was ambiguous and is open to interpretation, but since the majority of people watching seem to have seen the kiss as more of a romantic one, than a motherly one, this is something the writers will hopefully now have the courage to act upon further. The way Norma lingered on his lips just a fraction too long and they both closed their eyes and got lost in the moment gave a lot away.
That tension between the two characters has been played up so painstakingly perfectly over two seasons. The creators couldn’t possibly have imagined the suffocating strength of the sexual chemistry between Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore. They actually look like lovers and this is only going to increase as the show goes on. People getting excited over the tension between Norma and Romero will no doubt get their wish of seeing a tryst between the two, but their sexual chemistry will never match or even come close to that of Norman and Norma and a love scene between them would never have the velocity of one that could potentially (and should) occur between Norman and Norma. Vera and Freddie just have undeniable, sexy electricity which burns every scene they share and that electricity went full force at the end of Season 2 opening potential doors to many possible scenarios. As Norman starts to become more of a man in Season 3 his masculinity, assertiveness and sexual appetite will increase and there is no doubt a fire is going to be burning inside him for Norma. It would be interesting to see him caress her face and stroke her hair the way she does to him and see how she reacts to it. Norma could well start having a conscious realisation of her attraction to him which she would likely try to supress at first, but her love and chemistry with him will not allow her to do that forever especially if he’s being assertive. Her lust for him will be harder to ignore. Freddie and Vera are both incredibly attractive people and look good together and you have to imagine that this is purposeful. Given Norman and Norma’s messed up states of mind it’s now completely believable that Norma would find her son attractive and vice versa.
If the writers are brave enough, they have the power to create what could be one of the most sensual and meaningful love scenes in tv history. The slow burn of Norma and Norman’s sexual tension could go on for a while longer yet and scenes between the two could be increasingly sexually fuelled. A slow seduction of Norma by Norman, resulting in a scene where they finally give in to each other would be scintillating, breath taking, emotional and have a hot sensuality and steaminess that would be unrivalled, primarily because of the chemistry which has built up between of Vera and Freddie. You would have to assume that if it did ever happen, this chemistry would have reached fever pitch. They have the dynamic and capability to pull it off in a way that would certainly leave everyone breathless. They would be able to portray Norma and Norman in this beautiful, intimate, erotic situation giving into each other and even though they would be tinged with a conflict about what they were doing that, in that moment they would just bury that conflict as their desire to be closer than ever before and to become one took over them. Unlike Game of Thrones where incest is blatant and to a certain extent meaningless now, Bates Motel has played the incest card so tantalisingly subtlety that to take that final leap would be achingly seductive and more importantly it would be poignant and have a meaning because of their forbidden and unconditional love for each other. To them it would be right.
After the risks the writer’s they took in Season 2 they are in a place where they could actually take the show to this place and get away with it. To waste chemistry like Vera and Freddie’s would be criminal in this case. They have a perfect opportunity to create a truly iconic moment where the two consummate their love and become as close as two people can be. To have them making love would actually be symbolic; they would literally become one. Bates Motel has already proved just how beautiful their cinematography can be and if they coupled this with Vera and Freddie’s fire they could produce a visually stunning scene fuelled by an epic portrayal of sexual fireworks, desire and true love from the actors. It would certainly be a major disappointment now and massive wasted opportunity if the viewer’s aren’t treated to this in the end.
